Chapter 31 Not Entirely Bad News
Jasmine’s phone rang. It was the hospital.
“Ms. Thorne, could you please come down to the hospital right away?”
“Is something wrong?” Jasmine asked, confused.
“It’s regarding the samples used for your IVF procedure…”
Felicity watched the video on her phone, her blood boiling at the sight of Jasmine and Silas acting so inseparably. In a fit of rage, she hurled the device against the floor.
She hadn’t realized Victoria was walking in at that exact moment. Felicity froze, panic rising as she struggled to regain her composure. For as long as she had lived with the Vances, she had carefully maintained the image of the perfect, well-behaved daughter-in-law.
Victoria picked up the phone from the floor and gave the postpartum caregiver a nod, dismissing her from the room.
Once the door clicked shut, she turned to Felicity.
“What is there to be so angry about?” Victoria asked calmly. “That woman is just enjoying a temporary victory. You know Silas is the one who truly loves you, don’t you?”
Felicity gasped. “Victoria, how did you…”
She had never breathed a word of this to anyone, choosing instead to quietly exploit Silas’s feelings for
her.
“I’ve been around the block, Felicity. Besides, Silas is my own flesh and blood,” Victoria said. “You think I can’t read my own son’s mind?”
“Victoria…”
Victoria took her hand, her expression softening. “Don’t be afraid. I know the truth, but I’m not angry. In fact, I don’t object to the two of you being together at all.”
A surge of secret joy rushed through Felicity, though she kept her voice demure. “I only think of Silas as an older brother. Nothing more.”
“Don’t be silly,” Victoria said. “You’ve already given Silas a son. You can’t just call him your older brother anymore. Sooner or later, the two of you are meant to be together.”
Felicity looked down bashfully. “How could we? People would talk… the ethics of it alone…”
“As soon as Silas gets a divorce, it won’t matter,” Victoria insisted. “With you a widow and him a single man, what’s stopping you? Leo is your son-fate has already decided that you belong together.”

“A divorce?” Felicity asked, testing the waters. “But how could she ever agree to divorce Silas?”

The Thorne family was in ruins; Felicity knew Jasmine would cling to the Vance family’s wealth for dear life. There was no way she’d just walk away.
A predatory glint flashed in Victoria’s eyes.
“Whether they divorce isn’t up to her,” she said coldly. “Just wait. I’ll find a way to make it happen. I’m going to make sure she’s the one who files for it. When she walks out that door, she walks out with nothing. She won’t be taking so much as a blade of grass from the Vance family.”
Jasmine arrived at the hospital in record time. Dr. Carter Hayes, the physician who had handled her artificial insemination, greeted her with a grave expression and led her into a private office. Inside, a younger nurse named Emily Parker was waiting; her eyes were already red and swollen from crying, and the sight of Jasmine sent a fresh wave of tears down her face.
“Explain the situation to Mrs. Vance yourself,” Carter said sternly.
“I am so sorry, Mrs. Vance,” Emily sobbed. “The sample used for your insemination… I took the wrong one.
Jasmine froze. “What did you just say?”
“I didn’t use Mr. Vance’s sample that day,” Emily stammered. “It was someone else’s.”
It took a long moment for the words to sink in. “You’re telling me… the baby I’m carrying isn’t Silas’s?”
Jasmine couldn’t believe it. How could something so cliché and absurd happen to her?
“I’m so sorry,” Emily pleaded. “I was sick that day and felt terrible. My head was spinning… I never imagined I’d make such a massive mistake.”
Jasmine sat in silence for a long while, letting the shock settle. Eventually, she felt a strange sense of calm wash over her.
“Whose was it?” she asked.
Emily hesitated. “I… I’m not allowed to say.”
It was a strict hospital policy; donor information was confidential unless the donor gave explicit consent. Even when Jasmine had arranged to use Silas’s sample, she’d had to pull several strings to make it happen. She had never expected it to come to this.
Yet somehow, for Jasmine, the news did not feel entirely bad.
Jasmine’s expression hardened. “You realize how serious this is? If I file a formal complaint with the hospital, you’ll lose your job. In fact, you’d probably never work as a nurse again.”
Emily turned pale, fully aware of the stakes.
“Just tell her.” Carter urged, frustrated with his staff. “What’s the point in hiding it now? Do as Mrs. Vance says. She’s a reasonable woman; she’ll consider that.”

Emily finally cracked. “It belongs to Mr. Brooks.”
