“Without significant medical intervention and treatment, it would have been very difficult,” Carter confirmed.

Jasmine suddenly began to laugh, though the look in her eyes was hard to read.

‘Don’t worry, Mrs. Vance,” Carter said quickly. “We can take care of the procedure to terminate the pregnancy today. I’ll personally…”

“That won’t be necessary.”

Carter looked at her in surprise. “You’re keeping it?”

Leaving the hospital, Jasmine looked up at the sky. It was a perfect day-cloudless, still, and filled with warm sunshine.

She found a nearby café and sat alone for a long time, lost in thought. The news had come just in the nick of time; if it had been any later, she would have already gone through with the abortion. Deep down, she’d had a hard time letting go. Even if the child had been Silas’s, it still would have shared her blood.

But now, knowing the baby had nothing to do with him? She wondered if she should feel relieved.

When Sierra finally picked up the phone, she sounded slightly out of breath.

“Why are you panting?” Jasmine asked.

“I just had a massive blowout with my boss,” Sierra huffed. “That old bald fraud tries to pass the buck every time something goes wrong. It’s clearly his fault, but heaven forbid he actually takes responsibility for

once.”

Something flickered in Jasmine’s mind, but she kept it to herself. “Sierra, I have something to tell you. It’s going to sound like a plot point from a bad soap opera.”

Sierra grabbed a glass of water to steady herself. “Go ahead.”

“The baby I’m carrying… It’s Ethan’s.”

The sound of Sierra choking on her water erupted through the receiver, followed by a fit of coughing. Jasmine waited for her to recover before explaining the whole situation.

Sierra’s eyes went wide. “Jasmine, tell me this isn’t an April Fool’s joke.”

Jasmine smiled faintly. “It’s the truth.”

Sierra smacked her forehead. “My god… that really is like a soap opera.”

“I know,” Jasmine agreed.

Sierra paused as the realization sank in. “Actually, I think this is great news. As long as the kid isn’t Silas’s, it doesn’t feel so… tainted.”

“I was thinking the same thing,” Jasmine murmured.

“So.

are you still going through with the procedure?”

Jasmine didn’t have to think twice. “I’m keeping the baby.”

“That’s amazing! I’m back on duty as godmother!”

Jasmine rested a hand on her stomach, her mind wandering for a moment.

“Now that you know who the biological father is,” Sierra teased, “are you feeling excited?”

“Excited about what?”

“Excited to see what the baby will look like, obviously! Oh, and you still haven’t told me-what does this Ethan guy actually look like?”

Jasmine was about to answer when Silas’s name flashed across her screen.

“I’ll have to tell you later,” Jasmine said. “I’ve got another call.”

She switched lines, and Silas’s voice came through, sounding uncharacteristically soft. “You’re not home yet?”

Jasmine was in a relatively good mood. “No, I’m out running some errands.”

“Where are you? Do you want me to come pick you up?”

“No need, I have my car. Is something up?”

“Grandmother called,” Silas said. “She wants us back early for dinner”

Jasmine didn’t press for details. “Alright. I’m heading back now; I should be there in about half an hour.”

“I’ll be getting home around the same time,” Silas replied. “See you soon.”

As she hung up, Jasmine felt a sense of surrealism wash over her. Usually, when Silas spoke to her, he was either incredibly blunt or aimed straight for the jugular. Today, he sounded like a normal husband- considerate, even pleasant.

She gave a small, cynical scoff.

It was definitely going to take some getting used to.

Jasmine pulled into the garage just as Silas was stepping out of his car. After she parked, she noticed him waiting for her at the entrance.

Personal grudges aside, Silas was undeniably striking-the kind of man who turned heads wherever he went. She couldn’t help but wonder, though, how that handsome face would look if he ever found out he was being cheated on. Of course, it was just a hunch; she had no proof. Perhaps the “contribution” Silas
