Ethan merely glanced at her outstretched hand, his smile perfectly detached. “I’m sorry. I’m a bit of a germaphobe. I don’t typically shake hands.”

Chloe didn’t take offense. She pulled her hand back smoothly. “What did you say your last name was again? Brooks?”

“Ethan Brooks,” he replied, his lingering patience sustained entirely by basic politeness.

“Oh… Ethan. That’s a beautiful name.”

“Thank you.”

“Are you-”

“Excuse me, Ms. Vance,” Ethan interrupted seamlessly. “I have a phone call I need to take.” With that, he turned and walked away.

Watching his tall, striking figure weave through the crowd, Chloe’s heart hammered against her ribs. He stood out so effortlessly.

Was this what people meant by love at first sight?

With the paperwork officially finalized, Jasmine finally allowed herself a quiet sigh of relief. Still, a single house couldn’t even begin to repay what Silas owed her.

This was merely the beginning.

When she walked back over, she noticed Chloe’s eyes were practically glued to Ethan, and she immediately put two and two together.

Ethan returned from his call a moment later. “My apologies, Mr. Vance, but that was my office. There’s a critical issue with our new system update, and I need to head back immediately.”

Silas was perfectly accommodating. “Don’t worry about it, Mr. Brooks. Go take care of business, we’ll raincheck.”

“I appreciate your understanding, Mr. Vance.”

Silas watched Ethan walk away, but the moment the man vanished from sight, his polite demeanor vanished with him. His face darkened.

“Hmph. That Ethan is definitely not as easygoing as he pretends to be,” Silas muttered, almost to himself. “Word is his family runs Portshire-they have deep ties to both sides of the law, and his old man is ruthless. A wolf den doesn’t breed a harmless rabbit.”

Jasmine listened quietly, keeping her thoughts to herself. She preferred to judge people by her own observations rather than gossip. But watching Silas flip between two entirely different faces disgusted her, so she decided to prod him a little.

“Since he’s in the same industry, I’m worried he might give you a run for your money”

“Him? Compete with me?” Silas scoffed, his voice dripping with disdain. “Nexora Tech is a publicly traded powerhouse now. We have a research and development team that other companies can only dream of. and our brand is recognized globally. Zenith Tech hasn’t even established a foothold in Rivercrest yet You think a tiny player like him can shake our foundation?”

Jasmine offered a faint, placid smile. “You’re probably right.”

Confidence was a virtue, but blind arrogance was a liability.

Silas suddenly remembered his original rush. “Right, let’s get back and check on Leo.”

Jasmine caught her cue. “Silas, I won’t head back with you. I need to stop by the hospital to pick up my prescription.”

Assuming she meant the medication for her infection, Silas didn’t press the matter. He grabbed Chloe. who was still lost in her daydream, and dragged her toward the exit.

Jasmine pulled out her phone and sent Ethan a text.

[Are you free for a coffee?]

Ethan replied almost instantly.

[Turn right outside the door and walk about two hundred meters. There’s a nice little place over there.]

Jasmine: [See you in a bit.]

The café was small but elegantly decorated and quiet. Jasmine hadn’t driven, so she just walked over.

Ethan had already arrived and secured a quiet, private room. As Jasmine slid the door open, a waitress walked out, her face flushed red.

Perhaps because she didn’t feel any awkward distance between them-even though it was only their second meeting, it felt like they were old friends-Jasmine couldn’t help but tease him.

“You really should stay indoors more. Save the local girls the heartbreak.”

Ethan smiled faintly.

“Right back at you.”

With just a few words, he had smoothly returned the compliment.

Feeling a rare moment of self-consciousness, Jasmine sat down across from him.

“Thank you for earlier.”

“Don’t mention it,” Ethan replied. “If anything, I should be apologizing to you.”

Jasmine looked confused. “Apologizing to me?”

“I overheard your conversation.” Ethan admitted.
