Chapter 39 Orange Juice

“As long as you’ve thought it through,” Ethan said.

With that, he reached over and moved the coffee cup away from her. “Since you’re pregnant, you should skip the coffee from now on. Would you prefer orange juice or water?”

“Orange juice, please.”

Ethan pressed the service bell.

A moment later, the same waitress from earlier opened the door, looking shyly at Ethan.

“A glass of freshly squeezed orange juice, please,” Ethan ordered, before turning back to Jasmine. “Would you like anything else to eat?”

Jasmine thought about it for a second. “Some cake.”

Pregnancy really did change a person’s tastes. Before she got pregnant, Jasmine had never cared much for sweets like cake. But lately, just looking at the assorted cakes displayed in bakery windows was enough to make her mouth water.

The orange juice and cake arrived together.

Jasmine quietly enjoyed her food, while Ethan refrained from asking any more questions, simply offering his quiet company.

As she ate, a sudden wave of bitterness washed over her for no particular reason.

She set her fork down, a self-deprecating smile on her lips. “Do you find me ridiculous like this?”

Ethan offered a warm, elegant smile. “I was actually just about to say thank you.”

Jasmine looked at him in surprise. “Thank me for what?”

“For being so incredibly honest with me,” Ethan replied. “It seems we really are true friends now.”

With a single sentence, he had effortlessly swept away all of her embarrassment.

Once back in the car, Ethan’s expression grew increasingly grim.

Zack had never seen him look so serious. “Mr. Brooks?” he asked cautiously. “Is everything okay?”

Ethan pulled himself out of his thoughts. “Zack.”

“Yes, Mr. Brooks?”

“Have you ever loved someone?”

Zack blinked, caught off guard. “What?”

“Or rather,” Ethan clarified, “have you ever had an unrequited crush on someone?”

Zack gave it some serious thought. “Back in high school, I had a crush on the girl who sat in front of me. I used to mess with her all the time just to get her attention. But we were so young back then, who knows if it was real love or not.”

Ethan leaned back against his seat and turned his gaze back to the window, his mind wandering again.

“If someone you used to love suddenly reappeared in your life years later, would you pursue them?”

“Maybe, maybe not,” Zack replied. “A lot of time has passed, after all. People change.”

The backseat fell completely silent.

Zack couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. “Mr. Brooks, what’s going on with you today? You don’t really seem like yourself.”

“How do I usually seem?” Ethan asked.

“Well, you usually keep your cards close to your chest. You’re always decisive, completely in control, and practical about everything. But today…”

Ethan looked away from the window, leaning his head back and closing his eyes. “What about today?”

“Today you seem… nostalgic. Emotional, even.”

“Maybe,” Ethan murmured.

“Mr. Brooks, why the sudden questions about unrequited love anyway?”

“It’s nothing. Just…”

“Wait, Mr. Brooks, don’t tell me you used to have a crush on someone?”

“It wasn’t Ms. Wilde, was it?”

As far as Zack knew, the only woman Ethan ever had around him besides his fiancée was Jasmine. Though, come to think of it, Ethan didn’t exactly seem close to Ms. Wilde either. They felt more like old friends.

Ethan almost laughed. “Zack, you’ve gotten a lot bolder since we got to Rivercrest.”

He still remembered when they first met; Zack had been such a timid, hesitant kid back then.

Zack grinned, but before he could say anything else, Ethan’s phone started ringing.

The caller ID read Judy.

As Ethan pressed the answer button, a soft, graceful voice came through the speaker.

“Ethan? Are you busy?”

“Not particularly,” Ethan replied evenly.

“I wanted to talk to you about something.” Judy said.

“Go ahead.”
