“How about making me stand as punishment?” Jasmine suggested. “Just like Chloe was forced to do last

time.”

This suggestion was exactly what Chloe wanted to hear. She immediately chimed in. “Great idea, Grandmother! Make her stand. Keep her standing until she actually learns her lesson!”

“Since you brought it up, then-Madeline began.

“But I’m supposed to accompany Silas to that charity event next week,” Jasmine interrupted smoothly. If I injure my legs and outsiders notice, wouldn’t it just spark more rumors? That would completely ruin the loving couple image Silas worked so hard to build.”

Madeline nearly choked on her own breath, yet found herself completely unable to argue back.

The woman actually had a point. Right now, preserving Silas’s public image was the absolute priority.

“Grandmother, why don’t you forbid me from eating for a day instead?” Jasmine offered. “I can stay in my room and reflect on my actions.”

Victoria cut in before Madeline could speak. “Isn’t that letting you off too easily?!”

“How is that easy?” Jasmine countered. “Victoria, surely you know that being starved is what I dread most.”

Irritated by all the bickering, Madeline thought it over and decided a light punishment would suffice.

If she pushed this woman too far, there was no telling what she might do to harm the Vance family.

“Fine, we’ll do it your way.” Madeline said.

Victoria looked deeply unsatisfied as she helped Madeline back to her room.

As Chloe walked past Jasmine, she gritted her teeth and hissed, “Aren’t you clever? Escaping the fire yet again.”

Fire was certainly the right word for it. Every single day Jasmine spent in the Vance household lately felt like walking through flames.

Suddenly, Jasmine stuck her foot out and tripped Chloe.

Caught off guard, Chloe stumbled and nearly crashed to the floor.

“Jasmine! You did that on purpose!”

Jasmine smiled faintly. “I did. Consider it punishment for your complete lack of morals and compulsive lying.

“Why, you-!”

“Go to your room!” Silas commanded, his voice cold.

Chapter 41 Caught Off Guard

Chloe smirked triumphantly. “Silas told you to scram to your room. Didn’t you hear him?”

“I was talking to you!” Silas snapped.

Chloe bristled with anger. “Silas! What is wrong with you? I swear you’re protecting this woman more and more lately. You don’t even love her!”

Silas’s face darkened. “Do my words mean nothing to you? What are you supposed to call her?”

“In your dreams!” Chloe yelled, storming off without looking back.

Jasmine stepped closer to Silas, tilting her head with a knowing smile.

“Now that everyone’s gone, don’t you think it’s time my dear husband offered me a sincere apology?”

If Silas had just spoken up and told the truth today. Jasmine wouldn’t have been forced to take the fall like this. But he had chosen to stay silent.

Jasmine knew exactly why: he was afraid of crossing Madeline.

Although Silas ran the Vance family business now, Madeline still controlled the majority shares of Nexora Tech, along with several separate properties. Originally, she had planned to leave all of it to Julian. Outsiders would never know that Madeline’s most beloved grandchild was actually her youngest, Julian. The reasons behind it ran deep, tied to a pain and resentment she had carried her whole life and could never let go of.

Silas knew his grandmother favored his brother, and he didn’t really resent it. Lately, however, he had begun to feel a quiet aversion to Madeline’s authoritarian ways.

Still, Silas was an expert at hiding his feelings. His respect and obedience toward Madeline were purely business; after all, no one walks away from a fortune.

So when Madeline demanded to know why he had not come back at once, Silas replied without thinking, “I had to see things through with her first.”

That single sentence had thrown Jasmine straight into the fire.

Everyone assumed Jasmine had deliberately kept him from coming home. And with Chloe fabricating the rest of the story, the blame was pinned entirely on her.

Jasmine had no intention of suffering for a crime she didn’t commit.

“Silas, you’re my husband,” Jasmine said. “You’re the only person I have to rely on in this house. But I see now that you never actually intended to be my support. Just like Grandmother said, marrying me was nothing more than an impulse to you.”

Fortunately, she had already completely given up on this man. Otherwise, saying those words out loud might have brought her to tears.

She had framed it that way strictly to see if she could stir up a shred of guilt in him. To her surprise, the result was even better than she expected.
