Linda looked up, completely caught off guard. “Oh, Mrs. Vance, you’re far too kind. I’m just helping. It’s only expected that I have to put up with these things.”

“Even as an employee, you deserve respect,” Jasmine replied. “No one should ever be expected to just tolerate being mistreated.”

Touched by the sentiment, Linda said, “Mrs. Vance, you truly are a wonderful person.”

Jasmine patted her arm reassuringly. “Once your time here is up, I’ll put together a little bonus for you! Consider it compensation for everything you’ve had to put up with.”

Linda’s gratitude overflowed. “Thank you, Mrs. Vance. Thank you so much.”

“Go on, then. Take good care of Leo,” Jasmine said. “He’s terribly ill right now, so we can’t afford to be careless.”

“Oh, it’s not a serious illness at all,” Linda revealed. “It’s just an allergic reaction to a body lotion Felicity used on him the day before yesterday. It’s really no big deal and should clear up in a few days. But Felicity suddenly started wailing and making a scene, insisting they go to the hospital. Before that, she was actually terrified Madeline and the others would find out and blame her for being careless, so she was trying her best to keep it a secret.”

Jasmine clarified, “So you’re saying Leo isn’t actually sick, and the rash is just from an allergic reaction two days ago?”

“Exactly. Everyone at the hospital knew.”

Jasmine’s eyes flickered. “By ‘everyone, does that include Silas?”

“Oh, no, not him,” Linda said. “Silas happened to be stepping out to take a phone call at the time, so he had no idea.”

Jasmine didn’t know whether she should actually feel a bit sorry for Silas. As it turned out, the other women in the Vance family had deliberately kept him in the dark, teaming up to help his mistress vent her frustrations.

Felicity’s little stunt clearly served two purposes. First, she couldn’t accept reality, so she wanted to stop Silas from finalizing the title transfer with Jasmine. Second, she wanted to test Silas to see if he still cared about her and the baby enough to rush back at a moment’s notice.

In the end, it had backfired spectacularly.

No wonder Felicity had looked at her so differently when she walked in today. There was a newfound hatred burning in her eyes.

Well, if that was the case, Jasmine didn’t mind giving the mistress a reason to hate her even more.

“Is the diagnostic report still around?” Jasmine asked.

Having taken a real liking to Jasmine, Linda answered honestly, “They threw it out long ago. They

probably didn’t want Silas to see it.” She then looked down, a wave of guilt washing over her. “Mrs Vance. I actually wanted to speak up for you today, but you know how it is for someone in my position…”

Jasmine understood perfectly.

When you’re dependent on someone else for your livelihood, you don’t exactly have a voice.

“Don’t worry about it,” Jasmine said. “I’m incredibly grateful you told me all this. Rest assured, our conversation today won’t bring you any trouble.”

Relieved, Linda took her leave.

Jasmine walked back to her room and slept soundly for the rest of the night.

The next morning, Jasmine called Sierra the moment she woke up and filled her in on everything that had happened.

Sierra was absolutely livid. “You need to get out of that godforsaken place as soon as possible. Every single day you spend there is just pure torture.”

Jasmine let out a careless laugh. “They torture me, I make life miserable for them. We’re mutually disgusted with each other.”

“I swear, your mental fortitude is unmatched,” Sierra said, relaxing a bit. “Don’t worry, leave it to me. I’ll get this sorted out for you today.”

After hanging up, Jasmine instinctively started to walk out of her room before remembering she was supposedly grounded, which meant no breakfast for her. Turning back around, she pulled a pack of biscuits out of her drawer and started eating. Ever since she got pregnant, she had been constantly craving food, so she had purposely stocked her room with snacks. They were certainly coming in handy now.

Half an hour later, the door swung open.

Margaret walked in, carrying a tray of food. “Mrs. Vance, quick, eat up while it’s still hot.”

Jasmine felt a wave of gratitude mixed with worry. “If anyone sees you, you’re going to get into trouble.”

Margaret looked completely confident. “Don’t worry. Madeline and Victoria left early for the church fundraiser this morning, and Silas went to the office. As for Felicity, she hasn’t even stepped a foot out of her room; her meals are being delivered straight to her door. No one saw me.”

Before Jasmine could say a word, Margaret quickly added, “Hide the plate when you’re done. I’ll find a chance to come back and clear it later. I shouldn’t stay in your room too long. I’m off.”

At the doorway, Margaret paused and turned back, her face softening with sympathy. “Mrs. Vance, I know how lonely it feels to fight a battle all by yourself. But you need to keep your chin up. Think about the baby in your belly, and make sure you eat and drink well.”

People are funny that way. When you’re licking your wounds in isolation, you feel like you can handle anything. But the moment someone shows you a shred of genuine warmth, the tears want to fall.
