Felicity clenched her fists tightly. She was burning with rage, but couldn’t afford to lose her composure.

In front of Jasmine, she felt utterly small.

She was the treasured heiress of the Sterling Group.

And Jasmine was nothing but an orphaned stray adopted by the Thorne family.

Silas walked over and smiled when he saw how close the two of them looked.

“You two made up?”

Jasmine was confused.

Made up? What was he talking about?

Felicity, however, was quick to chime in.

“Silas, I already apologized to Jasmine, and she forgave me. So you aren’t allowed to scold me anymore!”

“When did I ever scold you?” Silas replied smoothly.

The irritation that had been clouding Felicity’s face instantly vanished. She walked over to Silas and naturally looped her arm through his.

“My parents are coming over today, Silas, so you’d better take good care of them. I always tell them how you treat me, even better than a real brother would.”

Silas beamed. “Of course I will. It actually works out perfectly-I need to talk to your dad about that piece of land in the southern suburbs anyway.”

“They still haven’t locked it down?” Felicity asked. “I heard my dad say it was pretty much a done deal.”

At the mention of the project, Silas’s smile faded slightly.

“It was close, but your dad called me last night and said the other party backed out.”

“What? How could that happen? What are they trying to pull?”

Silas sighed. “If we knew what they were thinking, it would be an easy fix. The most frustrating part is being completely in the dark.”

He had already spent a fortune bribing the people in charge of the land, and the contract was supposed to be signed within the next couple of days. How could things just change overnight?

Silas was completely battled.

Jasmine listened quietly, keeping her thoughts to herself.

The housemaid called everyone for breakfast.

Jasmine felt her heart sink at the sound of the unfamiliar voice. It definitely wasn’t Margaret.

A middle-aged woman she had never seen before stepped out of the kitchen, her face breaking into a wide smile the moment she saw Silas and Felicity.

“Silas, Felicity, breakfast is ready.”

She completely ignored Jasmine, treating the actual Mrs. Vance as if she were invisible.

Silas didn’t look surprised at all. “Gloria, where are Grandma and the others?”

“Madeline and Victoria are eating upstairs,” Gloria Bennett replied. “Chloe is still asleep.”

“Why aren’t they coming down to join us?” Silas asked.

Gloria didn’t mince words. “Madeline said she didn’t want to look at certain people and ruin her appetite.”

Instantly, everyone’s eyes shifted to Jasmine.

Jasmine couldn’t care less about their petty remarks. She had only one question. “Where is Margaret?”

An uncomfortable look crossed Silas’s face.

“Margaret said she’s getting too old for this,” Silas said. “She resigned on her own and went back to her hometown.”

Bullshit.

There was no way Jasmine was buying that.

“You threw Margaret out?” Jasmine demanded.

Gloria openly stared Jasmine up and down, completely lacking the tact expected of someone in her position. “Mrs. Vance, are you implying that I won’t do a good enough job?”

“Shut up!” Jasmine snapped.

Gloria blinked in surprise. “Mrs. Vance, I may be the help, but I’m actually a distant relative of Madeline’s. The very least you could do is show me some basic respect.”

Jasmine didn’t give her an inch.

Rage consumed her, threatening to break her usual composure. Overnight, the household staff had been replaced. Margaret would never have just walked out without saying a single word to her.
