Chapter 47 Schemer
Chapter 47 Schemer
Yes, she had dragged Margaret into this.
But how had they found out that Margaret had been sneaking food to her room?
Jasmine’s gaze locked onto Felicity.
Felicity was sporting a smug, provocative smirk.
In that instant, Jasmine knew exactly what had happened.
“Silas,” Jasmine said, genuinely setting aside her pride. “Margaret is getting on in years, and her son is an ungrateful wretch. If you dismiss her out of nowhere like this, how is she supposed to get by? Please, think of all the years she has devoted to this family and let her come back.”
Silas opened his mouth to speak, but the words failed him.
“If you feel that sorry for Margaret, why don’t you just adopt her as your own mother and take care of her until the day she dies?”
Victoria’s scathing voice cut through the room as she helped Madeline down the stairs.
Jasmine had a sudden urge to slap the woman right across the face. She forced it down and held her tongue.
“Grandma, this is my fault. I’m the one who dragged Margaret into this. If you want to punish someone, punish me. I’ll take whatever you give me. Just please, don’t fire Margaret. Please.”
Silas felt a pang of discomfort listening to her. He had never seen Jasmine back down like this before, humbling herself so completely for someone who was not even family.
“Oh, I wouldn’t dare punish the great heiress of the Thorne family,” Madeline said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “But Margaret is a Vance family employee. When a servant steps out of line, they get punished. The one thing I despise most in this life is someone who turns against the very people who shelter them.”
Jasmine took a deep breath. “Margaret was just worried I would starve. She only did it out of pity.”
Madeline shot Jasmine a look of pure disgust.
“What do you think this house is? What do you take me for? You think you’re so clever, like you can just play us all for fools?”
“She outsmarted herself,” Victoria chimed in. “Grandma has spent her entire life being sharper than everyone else. Did you really think she’d fall for your little tricks? We knew you’d use Margaret, so we kept a close eye on you. Did you honestly think you could pull a fast one just because we left the house?”
Jasmine knew she had no play left.
She already had food in her room and had never asked Margaret to bring her anything. Margaret had done it entirely out of the goodness of her heart, which only made Jasmine feel overwhelmingly guilty.

She cast a glance at the self-styled hero who had so helpfully reported back to them, and felt a wave of disgust unlike anything she had ever felt toward another person.
Felicity shifted her expression in the blink of an eye.
“Jasmine, I didn’t mean to do that! I was actually worried you were starving and wanted to bring you something myself, but then I saw Margaret was already on it. Grandma happened to call right then, and I just mentioned it without thinking. Jasmine, I’m so sorry…”
“Just shut up!” Jasmine snapped, completely out of patience.
It was glaringly obvious what she had done, yet she still insisted on playing the innocent, naive victim.
Feigning fright, Felicity shrank back and tucked herself behind Silas like a helpless little bird.
Silas frowned in disapproval. “Felicity is sweet and naive. She wasn’t overthinking things; she was just telling the truth. How is any of this her fault?”
Madeline creased her brow and barked a reprimand.
“Jasmine! Let’s get one thing straight-this is not your house, and you do not get to pitch a fit here!”
A wave of bitterness washed over Jasmine.
Not your house. How thoroughly welcoming.
“She must think the Thorne family is still as powerful as they used to be,” Victoria mocked. “Throwing your weight around in the Vance household? You chose the wrong place to act entitled.”
Jasmine let out a cold laugh, though a quiet ache stirred in her chest. Even if the Thorne family had fallen from its former glory, a starving camel was still bigger than a horse. If her own family actually cared about her and were willing to stand behind her, perhaps she would not have had to endure such humiliation under the Vances’ roof.
Jasmine smiled coldly. “I finally understand what it means to look down on people.”
“Jasmine!” Silas stepped forward quickly and grabbed her arm. “Watch your mouth!”
He leaned in closer, dropping his voice. “Did you completely forget what I told you last night?”
Jasmine tilted her head, a bitter smile on her face. “You mean the part about ‘making this marriage work”?”
Silas caught the blatant mockery in her eyes and lost his temper, too. “On the condition that you learn how to get along with everyone in this family!”
Jasmine’s smile turned utterly scathing.
Of course. This was the Silas she knew.
He never cared whether she was hurting or mistreated. The only things that mattered to him were the Vance family business and his first love.
