Still, she needed to release the suffocating anger building up in her chest.

With a mocking smile, she looked at Madeline, her eyes filled with nothing but disdain. “Grandma, you seem to be repeating yourself a lot lately. Is it really that I don’t want to be with Silas anymore, or is it that you don’t want me with him?”

Madeline stiffened, throwing a reproachful glance at Silas.

She had cornered Silas just last night to test the waters, but to her surprise, he had been completely against a divorce. That had been a major miscalculation on her part.

“In this house, my husband is my anchor,” Jasmine continued, deliberately shifting the target to Silas. “So. he’s the only one I listen to. If my husband decides he wants a divorce, I won’t say a single word against it But if he wants to stay together, I’m willing to stand by his side for the rest of our lives.”

Then, a sudden thought struck her, and she added, “Even if he makes mistakes in the future, I’ll forgive him and stick by him.”

Those final words felt like a sweet treat dropped right into Silas’s lap. In all the time they had been married, he had never heard Jasmine say anything so deeply moving.

Just like that, his heart softened.

“Grandma, Felicity’s parents are going to be here soon,” Silas intervened. “Let’s not ruin the mood and give outsiders a reason to gossip about us.”

He shot a meaningful look at Felicity as he spoke.

Felicity caught his drift. Though she was utterly resentful, she forced herself to play the peacemaker.

“Grandma,” Felicity said, walking over to wrap her arms around Madeline’s in a coaxing embrace. “Come on, it’s really not that big of a deal. We’re all family, so it’s normal to have little disagreements. Jasmine already knows she was wrong, so let’s stop blaming her, okay?”

The sheer hypocrisy of it made Jasmine sick to her stomach, but she forced herself to stay quiet. Snapping back now would only jeopardize her plans.

Madeline’s expression softened slightly, though her words remained incredibly harsh.

“Hphm. If she actually realized she was wrong, the sun would rise in the west. I’ll let it slide today, but only for Felicity’s sake. Her parents will be here shortly, and if you can’t put on a pleasant face, you’d better make yourself scarce.”

That was exactly what Jasmine wanted to hear.

“In that case, maybe I’ll go stay at my parents’ house for a couple of days,” Jasmine said. “That way, I won’t ruin the mood for everyone.”

“Suit yourself,” Madeline snapped.

Jasmine had completely lost her appetite. She dragged her stiff, exhausted body back toward her bedroom. one heavy step at a time.

Behind her back stood a pack of wolves, practically itching to tear her apart alive. They were marking their territory, trying to force her into submission and drive her to give up on her marriage. That was why they had targeted Margaret-the only person in the Vance family who had ever shown her genuine kindness.

Silas’s promise from last night echoed in Jasmine’s mind again: I want to make this marriage work.

Ha!

So this was his idea of making it work. His version of a marriage meant forcing her to live forever under the thumb of the Vance family, trapped in a life of absolute, humiliating degradation.

Jasmine leaned against the door and tried calling Margaret, only to find the number was no longer in service.

Madeline had really gone all out this time, completely cutting off any way to get in touch. Thinking back on how good Margaret had been to her over the last three years, tears began to stream down Jasmine’s face. It had been a very long time since she had felt this heartbroken.

When Sierra called, Jasmine answered, her voice thick and raspy from crying.

Sierra panicked instantly. “Jasmine, what’s wrong?” In her mind, Jasmine was someone who was always strong and optimistic.

A deep sense of helplessness washed over Jasmine, making her want to sob out loud.

Sierra’s anxiety spiked. “Jasmine? Talk to me!”

Jasmine took a moment to compose herself, finally managing to calm down.

Two minutes later, Sierra’s furious, deafening voice blasted through the phone.

“Silas is an absolute piece of trash! A total deadbeat! He is messily entangled with Felicity while claiming he wants to build a life with you. He’s terrified of his grandmother, completely coddles his mistress, and just treats you like a punching bag stuck in the middle! He is a certified, gold-plated scumbag! And Felicity- how can a homewrecker be that damn arrogant? You seriously need to show Silas her true colors so he can see exactly what kind of trash he fell for!”

Jasmine managed to keep a level head. “Silas’s loyalty will always tilt toward Felicity. Even if the evidence is staring him right in the face, it won’t matter.”

Take yesterday’s clinic report, for example. Even though Silas had seen proof with his own eyes that Felicity lied, nothing came of it. Judging by how smug Felicity was today, Silas hadn’t even had the heart to

blame her.

An idea struck Sierra. “Haven’t you always suspected that the child isn’t even Silas’s? Why don’t we secretly get a paternity test done for them? If the results come back and the kid really isn’t his, the fallout will be spectacular. The entire Vance family will become the laughingstock of Rivercrest.”
