But as an expectant mother herself, Jasmine just couldn’t bring herself to draw blood from a child.
Silas walked in and felt a pang of guilt at the sight of Jasmine’s red, swollen eyes.
“It might be for the best if you stay at your parents’ place for a couple of days,” he said. “It’ll prevent any more arguments and give Grandma some time to cool down. Once she’s over it, you can come back.”
He held out a bank card to her.
“You mentioned before that you wanted to travel. If things get stressful at your family’s house, go somewhere to clear your head. Take this card and spend whatever you want. Just don’t get too carried away. Don’t forget that the charity auction is in a few days, and I need you there by my side.”
Jasmine took the card without a second thought. There was no point in letting Silas’s money go to waste. The moment she took it, Silas spoke up again. “You should head out now. They’ll be arriving any minute.” Jasmine managed a bitter, internal smile.
As Silas Vance’s lawfully wedded wife, was she really that much of an embarrassment to be seen?
Still, she couldn’t bring herself to care anymore.
“Alright,” she said.
Jasmine stood up, grabbed her bag, and headed for the door.
As she reached the exit, Silas’s voice called out hesitantly behind her. “Jasmine…”
Stopping in her tracks, she kept her back to him. “What is it?”
Silas fell silent for a long moment before finally saying, “Nothing. Go ahead.”
For a fleeting second, a wave of regret had washed over him.
Was it possible he actually felt something for this woman?
He dismissed the thought immediately.
There was no way.
Once she stepped outside, Jasmine realized she was still in her loungewear. She had Caleb’s birthday party to attend tonight, and she couldn’t exactly show up looking like this. Fortunately, she still had some clothes left at her parents’ house, so she headed back to Grand Manor first.
The moment she walked through the door, the sound of cheerful laughter drifted from inside. In Jasmine’s memory, the only person who could ever make Eleanor laugh with such genuine, doting warmth

Jasmine walked into the living room and sighed inwardly at the sight of a figure she couldn’t bring herself to like. Her brother, Hugh-Eleanor’s absolute pride and joy-was back in the country. He hadn’t changed a bit, still sporting that same lazy, nonchalant attitude, though she had to admit he had grown even more handsome after all these years.
“Mom,” Jasmine called out.
Eleanor looked up in surprise. “What are you doing home out of the blue?”
“I was just passing by, so I decided to drop in.” Jasmine replied evenly.
Eleanor, her hand still tightly clasping Hugh’s, beamed. “Look at your brother. Don’t you think he’s grown so much handsomer?”
“Yeah, much handsomer,” Jasmine offered half-heartedly.
Hugh raised an eyebrow. “Jasmine, we haven’t seen each other in years. Aren’t you even a little excited to see me?”
“I’m an adult now,” Jasmine said flatly. “I’ve learned to keep my emotions to myself.”
“Oh?” Hugh pulled his hand away from his mother and sauntered over. “So that means you are glad I’m back.”
Jasmine wrinkled her nose slightly, caught off guard by the strong, overpowering scent of his cologne. “This is your home. Why would you need my welcome?”
Hugh opened his arms wide. “Then how about a welcome-home hug, Jasmine?”
Jasmine recoiled at the gesture. When she was eighteen, a fourteen-year-old Hugh had pulled a prank by barging into the bathroom while she was showering because she had forgotten to lock the door. Thankfully, she hadn’t taken off her underwear yet, sparing her from total exposure, but an eighteen-year- old girl already understood the concept of shame. Furious, she had slapped him hard across the face.
As a boy who had been coddled and spoiled his entire life, Hugh couldn’t handle the grievance and immediately ran to Eleanor. He insisted it was an accident and that he had no idea she was in there. Because of that slap, Jasmine was forced to stand in the living room for three hours as punishment. If her father, Arthur, hadn’t come home and put a stop to it, she would have been forced to stand there all night.
That was the first night Jasmine ever saw Arthur snap at Eleanor. It was also the moment she realized her father loved her just as much as he loved Hugh. Unfortunately, he was ultimately afraid of Eleanor. To keep from putting Arthur in a difficult position, Jasmine learned to stop telling him whenever Hugh bullied her. That fraction of Arthur’s affection became the only thing that kept Jasmine going in the Thorne household.
Recalling that bathroom incident while looking at the now-grown, deeply masculine Hugh made her skin crawl. She wanted absolutely no physical contact with him—especially since she could see the
