Eleanor dismissed it with a wave of her hand. “So what if he’s twenty-four? He’s your brother, not some stranger. Are you seriously acting like your own brother is beneath you?”

Already miserable from everything that had happened at the Vance house, Jasmine felt a dark, heavy cloud settle over her. The suffocating weight of her built-up emotions was making it hard to breathe. Wanting nothing more than to escape, she turned to leave.

Suddenly, Hugh threw his arms around her.

Jasmine’s skin crawled. Acting on pure instinct, she shoved him away with such force that the unsuspecting Hugh stumbled backward, nearly losing his footing.

That instantly set Eleanor off. “Jasmine! What do you think you’re doing?!”

Jasmine turned to her mother, her expression icy. “Mom, have you already forgotten that I’m the reason this family just survived a massive financial crisis?”

Eleanor blinked, taken aback. “Why are you bringing that up out of nowhere?”

“I’m bringing it up to remind you that the only reason you got that loan-and the only reason your repayment terms are so incredibly lenient-is because of my leverage. So you had better start showing me some basic respect. If I can give you ten years to pay off that debt, I can easily make you pay it back in

one.”

Eleanor was instantly cowed. She had never seen her daughter look so fierce and intimidating. Something about Jasmine felt different-or perhaps, this was who her adopted daughter had truly been all along.

“Your brother was just teasing you,” Eleanor said, her tone softening immediately. “There’s no need to take it so seriously. I’ll talk to him later.”

“Don’t bother,” Jasmine said. She fixed a cold stare on Hugh. “Keep your hands to yourself from now on, or I will break them.”

Hugh wasn’t intimidated in the slightest. Instead of getting angry, a rakish smirk spread across his face. “You know, Jasmine, you’ve really grown on me over the years.”

The comment carried a distinctly suggestive undertone. Eleanor, however, assumed her son was just treating his adopted sister like real family and thought nothing of it.

Jasmine knew exactly what he meant. Giving Hugh one last warning look, she turned and walked up to her room. Fortunately, the maids cleaned it every day, leaving it completely spotless.

Jasmine opened her closet, pulled out a small suitcase, and packed a few changes of clothes. Despite the misery she had endured at the Vance house, she had no intention of staying here or crying to her family. Fortunately, she had Moonlight Terrace now. At least she had a place to call her own.

As she headed toward the door with her suitcase, Eleanor caught sight of her.

“What are you doing with a suitcase?” Eleanor asked, looking perplexed.

Jasmine kept it brief. “I’m going away for a couple of days.”

“If you’re going on a trip, why didn’t you pack at your own place? Why come all the way here for a suitcase?”

My own place?

A pang of heartache hit Jasmine. Aside from Moonlight Terrace, which she had fought tooth and nail to wring out of Silas, she didn’t have a home to call her own.

Having already prepared an excuse, Jasmine replied smoothly, “I was just passing by anyway. What difference does it make where I pack?”

Eleanor caught on. “You’re leaving tonight?”

“Yes.”

“Did you tell them at the house?”

“I already let Silas know.”

Eleanor adopted a solemn, maternal tone. “Jasmine, you’ve been married into the Vance family for three years now. Stop focusing so much on just having fun. You need to hurry up and have a baby with your husband. A child is your security. Otherwise, what are you going to do if he goes out and has a baby with another woman?”

Jasmine scoffed inwardly.

What do you mean ‘if? He already had. The only difference was that it wasn’t with some random woman from the streets—it was with someone right under their noses.

“I have to go,” Jasmine said, wanting to end the conversation.

But Eleanor stepped in her way. “I’m not finished talking to you.”

Forced to be patient, Jasmine stood and listened.

“Jasmine, you know as well as I do that even though we survived the financial crisis, Thorne Enterprises will never be what it used to be. The Vances, on the other hand, are at the absolute peak of their power. They’ve completely replaced us in Rivercrest. Yet, Silas hasn’t brought up a divorce and was even willing to bail us out. That means he still cares about you. You need to give him a child as soon as possible, lock him down, and hold on tight. Do you understand?”

Jasmine pressed her lips together and remained silent.

Eleanor sighed. “The Thorne family has nothing left to give you. Your future depends entirely on the Vances now, so keep your wits about you. And fix that attitude of yours. Stop living so self-indulgent and put some effort into pleasing your husband, Madeline, and Victoria.”

Jasmine let out a quiet sigh. “Are you done?”
