Jasmine felt a stir of emotion. “Why on earth would you look into something like that?”
Ethan’s expression remained completely earnest. “We’re going to be working together quite a bit from now on, so I need to be prepared. You’re pregnant, after all, and I can’t just treat you like anyone else.”
A sudden warmth flooded Jasmine’s chest. “You’re going to make a wonderful father someday.”
Ethan froze.
Belatedly realizing how awkward that sounded, Jasmine quickly backpedaled to clarify. “I mean, whenever you and your wife have children in the future, you’ll definitely be a great dad.”
Ethan pressed his lips together, offering no reply.
The atmosphere instantly turned tense. Jasmine cleared her throat, desperate to change the subject. “So, um, when are we signing the contract for the game?”
“Anytime over the next couple of days,” Ethan replied. “Whenever you’re free.”
“I can meet you tomorrow afternoon, then.”
“Sounds good. I’ll send you a location. It was careless of me to have you visit my office last time. It’s better if our meetings stay under the radar.”
“Thank you for being so understanding,” Jasmine said.
Ethan put the car in drive, and they rode the rest of the way in silence. After parking in Jasmine’s apartment garage, Ethan walked back to his own building alone.
Jasmine grimaced in the quiet of her car.
Why did her stupid mouth keep ruining the mood?
Ethan had just reached his apartment door when his phone rang. It was his father, William.
“Hey, Dad,” Ethan said, picking up.
“I heard you secured that plot of land in the southern suburbs,” William said.
“Yeah, I did.”
“Why the sudden move? I thought you said you wanted to wait it out a bit longer.”
“The timing was just right,” Ethan replied.
And, frankly, he had found someone… rather irritating to look at.
“The Sterling family invested a massive amount of resources and pulled a lot of strings to grease the wheels for that deal.” William warned. “They were practically ready to sign the contract when you snatched

it out from under them. Theodore isn’t someone you want to mess with. You need to be incredibly careful moving forward.”
“I know.”
“You’re not coming home tonight?” William asked.
“No.”
“Are you avoiding me because I’ve been nagging you about Judy?”
“Of course not.”
“Well, Judy already told me she plans to relocate her career to Rivercrest,” William said. “I can tell she’s genuinely ready to settle down and build a life with you. That’s a good thing, Ethan. Don’t let your stubbornness get in the way.”
Ethan leaned against the door and lit a cigarette. Through the drifting smoke, the faint look of exhaustion on his face flickered in and out of view.
Three years ago, Ethan had gotten engaged solely to fulfill his mother’s dying wish. Around that same time, Judy was absolutely miserable, trying to recover from a devastating breakup. To help her move on, the elders of the Wilde family had teamed up with the Brooks family to push the two of them together. They had always believed the childhood sweethearts were destined to be a couple.
But in reality, one was completely detached, and the other was entirely uninterested. They had drifted so far apart that their paths barely crossed anymore.
The engagement had been engineered purely to give the elders their happy ending. What the parents didn’t know was that on the very night of their engagement, Judy had laid everything out for Ethan.
She had told him, “Ethan, I’m not ready to fall in love with anyone else yet. Even though we’re engaged, 1 want us to give each other plenty of space and freedom.”
At the time, Ethan had offered only a single-word reply: “Okay.”
Since then, they had both thrown themselves into their respective lives, barely communicating outside of their official titles. In three years, they hadn’t even shared an intimate moment.
Ethan took a deep drag of his cigarette. The harsh smoke caught in his throat, making him cough twice as he stared back down the hallway in the direction he had just come from, his mind racing with a thousand thoughts.
He flipped open the custom, limited-edition lighter in his hand. Engraved on its casing was a rare symbol -the emblem of the K-Alliance from ten years ago.
Jasmine paced back and forth outside her front door, hesitating to go in.
It was her first time at this apartment, and she hadn’t realized the door used a keypad lock. Since she didn’t know the code, she only had two options: call a locksmith or ask Silas.
