“Well, having the prize snatched right out from under his nose would certainly put him in a bad mood, Jasmine scoffed. “I imagine your father is feeling pretty miserable right now, too.”

Felicity’s voice instantly went cold. “How do you know about that?”

“Didn’t you discuss the southern suburbs land deal with your precious Silas right in front of me today

Felicity fell silent, speechless.

Feeling her mood lift slightly, Jasmine added in a casual drawl, “Take good care of my husband for me, won’t you?”

With that, she hung up.

On the other end, Felicity nearly threw the phone across the room. She had answered on purpose, expecting to hear Jasmine break down in hysterics. Instead, Jasmine had sounded completely calm and unbothered.

Felicity gritted her teeth. “Jasmine! Let’s see how long you can keep up this act! There’s no way you don’t care!”

A few minutes later, Felicity’s expression softened as she looked at the man fast asleep on the bed. She slowly took off her coat, stripping down to her underwear, and slipped beneath the covers. Pressing her soft chest against his firm shoulder, a sudden wave of heat surged through her.

She pressed her crimson lips gently against his back, her hands beginning to wander. She desperately missed the night they had conceived the child, remembering how they had lost themselves in each other until dawn. The sheer ecstasy of that night still constantly haunted her thoughts.

Felicity’s breathing grew shallow and hurried, her eyes clouded with desire.

She felt a sharp pang of resentment that, because she had just given birth, she couldn’t lose herself in the arms of the man she wanted so badly again just yet.

Ultimately, Jasmine called a locksmith to get the door open. Once inside, she went ahead and reset the passcode.

That night, as she lay in bed, she felt lighter than she had in a long time. The apartment was finally hers. Having a place of her own meant having a real shelter from the storm, and with it came a deep sense of security. Jasmine slept peacefully.

Early the next morning, she was jarred awake by a barrage of phone calls from Sierra.

“How did I get home last night?” Sierra demanded the moment Jasmine answered. “And who changed my clothes?”

Jasmine chuckled. “Who else but me?”

“Oh, thank god, you scared me,” Sierra sighed. “I thought I’d done something crazy while I was wasted.”

“Is that a habit of yours?”

Sierra stretched. “Never used to be, but hey, you never know.”

“In that case, I really need to pass along a message from Ethan.”

“What do you mean?”

Jasmine repeated everything Ethan had said word for word. To top it off, she gave a vividly theatrical reenactment of exactly how sloppy Sierra had been while drunk.

The line went dead silent.

A moment later, Sierra let out a sudden, ear-splitting shriek. Jasmine winced, quickly pulling the phone away from her ear and slapping it onto speakerphone.

“What am I going to do? What am I going to do?” Sierra wailed. “I can never see him again. This is so embarrassing!”

Jasmine teased her for a bit before her tone turned serious. “Hey, are you hiding something from me?”

Sierra paused. “Hiding what?”

“I couldn’t help but notice the cardboard boxes on your desk yesterday” Jasmine said, a hint of disappointment in her voice. “Did you pack up your office?”

Sierra hesitated. “Damn it. I can’t believe you caught that.”

“You quit your job and didn’t even bother to tell me?”

“It’s just a job, it’s not that big of a deal,” Sierra rationalized. “I was going to wait until I found a new one before bringing it up. Besides, you have enough on your plate right now. I didn’t want to burden you with my problems.”

“I know how fiercely independent you are, Sierra. But I still want you to tell me when things aren’t going

well.”

“Alright, alright. I promise I’ll tell you everything from now on, okay?”

“Good. So, what’s the plan now?”

Sierra thought about it for a second. “Well, going back to run the family business is out of the question- that would totally ruin my grand ambitions. I’ve officially decided to dedicate my youth to the tech industry.”

“Remember when we talked about wanting to develop our own domestic operating systems and microchips?” Jasmine asked.

“Yeah, you brought it up before, but the timing and resources just weren’t right.”

“Well, someone else has the exact same idea now.”
