Silas had indeed blacked out last night, but he had fallen asleep right where he was. It was Victoria who had ordered the servants to carry him into Felicity’s room, her intentions crystal clear. Unfortunately for Felicity, Silas had been so dead to the world that she couldn’t make anything happen, no matter how much she wanted to. She’d had to settle for just holding him all night.
Silas looked down at the pajamas he was wearing. “Did you change my clothes?”
“I did,” Felicity said sweetly. “I know how much of a neat freak you are, so I gave you a wipe down and changed you into clean pajamas.”
Silas frowned slightly. “Don’t do that again.”
Felicity sat up, looking at him with wide, pleading eyes. “Silas, did I do something wrong?”
Silas sighed softly. “No.”
“Then why do you look so unhappy?”
Silas was quiet for a moment. “I just don’t think this is appropriate. After all… you’re Julian’s wife.”
Felicity’s eyes welled with tears. “Silas, do you know why I refused to remarry and insisted on staying with the Vance family?”
Silas answered absentmindedly, his mind elsewhere. “Wasn’t it because you loved Julian?”
Felicity shook her head, the tears spilling over. “No. It was because I love you.”
Silas froze, completely blindsided.
“What did you just say?”
Suddenly, Felicity threw her arms around him. “Silas, I’ve kept this bottled up inside for so long. I wanted so badly to tell you, but I was terrified. I was afraid that if I spoke the truth, you’d despise me and kick me out. She wrapped her arms tightly around his neck, burying herself against him. “Living here with you, seeing how incredibly good you are to me… I couldn’t control my feelings anymore. Before I knew it, I realized I had fallen in love with you.”
Before Silas could even process her words, Felicity pressed her lips against his.
Her lips were soft, and for a fleeting, disorienting second, the sensation caught him off guard, making him forget to pull away. But the moment her tongue parted his lips, reality snapped back. He grabbed her arms and firmly shoved her off him.
“Felicity! What do you think you’re doing?” his voice boomed, sharper than intended.
Felicity gazed up at him, her eyes brimming with raw devotion. “Silas, I love you.”
Silas’s mind was a chaotic mess. “Felicity, you’re out of your mind!”

If she had said those words to him in the past, he would have been ecstatic. But now? He felt absolutely no joy Felicity grabbed his hand, refusing to let go. “I’m not crazy, Silas. I mean every word. I’ve truly fallen for you. And… and you feel the same way about me, don’t you?”
Did he? Silas couldn’t even tell anymore. He couldn’t differentiate whether what he felt for her now was genuine affection or just pity.
“Felicity…”
“Silas,” she interrupted, her voice pleading. “I’m not asking for a title, and I would never expect you to get a divorce to marry me. I just want to be near you and love you. Please?”
A wave of complex emotions washed over Silas. He felt a sharp pang of regret-furious with himself, for stepping into this room and sleeping in this bed last night. At the same time, seeing Felicity look so vulnerable and pathetic made his heart ache for her. But overriding it all was guilt. He couldn’t forget that he was a married man. His wife had only been gone for a single day, yet he already found himself missing her.
Looking down at Felicity’s tear-stained, pitiful face, Silas let out a heavy, audible sigh. “Felicity, I admit I used to have feelings for you, but that’s in the past. I have a wife now-”
“Silas,” Felicity whispered, placing a hand over his mouth to silence him. “Don’t say it. I understand.”
Tears began to stream down her face like a broken string of pearls. “I understand your loyalty to your marriage, and I know you don’t want to be condemned as a cheating husband. That’s why I’m not asking for anything. Just let me stay by your side. Even if…” She choked back a sob. “Even if it’s only as your sister-
in-law.”
Silas had no recollection of how he managed to leave her room. His mind was spinning, leaving him deeply agitated and restless.
He pulled out his phone, instinctively wanting to call Jasmine. But his fingers hovered over the screen, and he hesitated.
If he called her first, wouldn’t it look like he couldn’t function without her?
Brushing the thought aside, Silas put his phone away.
