But when he murmured it a second time, reality sank in.

She had been consumed by a wave of furious resentment, wanting nothing more than to slap him awake right then and there. In the end, she couldn’t bring herself to do it. She genuinely loved him.

Theodore, usually a formidable and imposing figure, softened completely, showing the fiercely protective side of a doting father. “If he didn’t care about you, he wouldn’t treat you so well. Silly girl, you’re carrying his child now. He’s not going to abandon you.”

Felicity looked anxious. “But that baby…”

“Felicity!” Theodore cut her off sharply. “Walls have ears.”

Terrified, Felicity instantly clamped a hand over her mouth.

Theodore stroked her hair gently. “Don’t forget what I told you, Felicity. Julian is gone. The only way you can secure your place in the Vance family is by holding onto Silas as tightly as you can.”

Felicity bit her lip and nodded. “I know, Dad.”

“As for that Jasmine…” A vicious glint flashed across Theodore’s eyes. “Don’t worry. I won’t let her stand in the way of you and Silas.”

Three days later, word spread like wildfire through the industry.

Within a mere seventy-two hours, Nexora Tech’s core engineering team had resigned in droves, only to immediately sign on with Zenith Tech, an obscure startup. The move left everyone baffled. No one could understand why these tech heavyweights would willingly abandon a major public corporation to jump ship to a brand-new outfit just getting off the ground in Rivercrest.

For Silas, it was a crippling blow. With a new model currently in development, losing his top talent completely paralyzed the project.

Meanwhile, Jasmine was curled up at home, on the phone with Ethan.

“At this rate,” Jasmine said, “Silas is probably going to view you as his mortal enemy.”

“It doesn’t matter to me how he sees me,” Ethan replied.

Jasmine let out a soft laugh. “Fair point.”

“I found the person you were looking for,” Ethan added.

Jasmine blinked, caught off guard. “You did?”

“Yes. I didn’t want to disappoint you.”

“Where are they? I can head over right now.”

“Sounds good.”

Since Ethan also lived in Moonlight Terrace, only a few hundred yards away, it didn’t take him long to

arrive.

Jasmine glanced out her window and immediately spotted his car parked downstairs. Not wanting to keep him waiting, she hurriedly threw on a jacket, grabbed her bag, and rushed out the door.

The moment she stepped out of the elevator, a gust of biting wind hit her, making her shiver. Fortunately, the heater in Ethan’s car was already blasting, filling the cabin with warmth.

Ethan glanced at her jacket. “Winter is just around the corner, and it’s getting freezing out. You should dress a bit warmer.”

“I saw your car downstairs and rushed right down,” Jasmine said. “But it’s fine, it’s nice and warm in here.”

“I don’t mind waiting for you. There’s no need to rush.”

His words brought a sudden warmth to Jasmine’s heart. The more time she spent with him, the more he seemed completely flawless. Everything he said and did was perfectly measured. He knew exactly how to balance their interactions, never asking what he shouldn’t, and never saying more than necessary. It made Jasmine feel incredibly comfortable around him.

And now that she knew he was actually King, her admiration for him had only grown.

“Is it a long drive to where Margaret lives?” Jasmine asked.

“You should probably brace yourself,” Ethan replied instead.

A sudden wave of dread washed over Jasmine. “Did something… happen to Margaret?”

Ethan started the engine, his tone calm and reassuring. “She’s had some trouble, but she’s alright.”

Jasmine opened her mouth to press for more details, but then thought better of it. She would see for herself soon enough.

The car soon merged onto the highway. Keeping Jasmine’s pregnancy in mind, Ethan intentionally slowed his pace, and the gentle motion quickly lulled her to sleep in the passenger seat.

Ethan turned off the music.

Enclosed in the quiet warmth of the car, Jasmine drifted deep into a dream. She saw so much-Arthur, Eleanor, and all the various monsters lurking within the Vance family. Then, the scenery abruptly shifted.

A strange woman appeared in her dream, walking down a street. She looked rushed, confused, and was muttering under her breath as if looking for something. No matter how hard Jasmine tried, she couldn’t make out the woman’s face. She tried to step closer, but the closer she got, the further the woman drifted away. It was as if an invisible barrier stood between them, keeping them forever apart.
