Even under the worst circumstances, she should have been able to afford a decent apartment. Why on earth was she here?
Just as they reached the landing, a loud crash echoed from inside. Ethan knocked on the door.
A moment later, the metal door screeched open to reveal a disheveled, clean-shaven man who looked to be in his late forties. His features bore a striking resemblance to Margaret’s. Jasmine immediately guessed this was Gary-Margaret’s deadbeat son. Approaching fifty, he still spent his days idling away. He used to have a wife and kids, but his chronic drinking and gambling had driven them away long ago. After they left, Gary only spiraled further. Whenever he ran out of money, he would badger his mother for more. Margaret was at an age when she should have been enjoying her retirement, yet she was still forced to work as a nanny just to get by.
Seeing the reality of the situation, Jasmine finally understood why Margaret lived here. With a parasite of a son like him, she was lucky to have a roof over her head at all.
“I’m looking for Mrs. Gable,” Jasmine said directly.
Gary, looking like he had just rolled out of bed, waved her off impatiently. “Yeah, yeah. Whatever. Come back later.”
“I’m here to see Margaret,” Jasmine pressed.
Gary paused, eyeing the two visitors up and down. They clearly had money. Shifting his attitude slightly, he asked, “Who are you guys?”
Jasmine maintained her polite demeanor. “We’re friends of Margaret’s. We need to speak with her.”
Gary smirked, flashing teeth yellowed from years of heavy smoking “She has friends like you?”
Losing her patience, Jasmine bypassed him and called out into the apartment. “Margaret? Are you in there? It’s me!”
After a brief silence, there was a sudden commotion inside, followed by the sound of someone collapsing. Panicking, Jasmine shoved past Gary to get inside.
Gary reached out to block her, but Ethan swiftly struck his wrist. Gary recoiled, nursing his hand and shouting, “This is breaking! I’m calling the cops!”
Jasmine ignored him entirely. Gary, of course, had no actual intention of calling the police; he knew doing so would only land him in trouble.
Just a few days ago, Gary’s gambling urges had flared up again, leaving him with a mountain of debt he couldn’t possibly pay off. Naturally, he turned to Margaret for money. But Margaret refused, desperate to hold onto the meager savings she needed to survive. A heated argument ensued, and in a fit of rage, Gary had violently slammed his mother to the floor. For a woman nearing seventy, the brutal fall had broken her bones, leaving her helpless.
Margaret heard Jasmine calling her name. In her excitement, she tried to move, only to tumble right off

the bed. Cold sweat broke out across her forehead from the sheer agony of the fall.

The sight broke Jasmine’s heart. She rushed to her side, sick with worry. “Margaret! What happened to you?”
Margaret was overwhelmed to see her. “Mrs. Vance! How… how did you find this place? Please, you have to leave! It’s so dirty and messy in here, I don’t want you ruining your clothes.”
Jasmine’s chest tightened with sorrow. “Let me help you up first.”
Before she could, Ethan caught Jasmine by the arm and gently pulled her back. “I’ve got her,” he said.
He bent down, lifted Margaret carefully into his arms, and laid her back onto the bed. Jasmine watched him, momentarily dazed. Margaret clearly hadn’t washed her hair or changed her clothes in days, and there was a distinct odor clinging to her. Yet Ethan hadn’t shown a single hint of reluctance or disgust.
Margaret seemed acutely embarrassed by her own state. “I’m so sorry… my arm is broken, so I haven’t been able to wash up lately. It’s shameful for you to see me like this.”
Ethan offered her a warm, reassuring smile. “Don’t worry about it at all.”
Looking up at the handsome, striking man before her, Margaret asked, “And you are?”
“He’s a friend of mine,” Jasmine answered for him.
Margaret nodded, choosing not to pry further, but the tears soon began to stream down her face. “Look at me, making a scene. It’s my own fault. I’m useless. I failed to raise my son right.”
Suddenly, Gary barged into the room. “What are you crying to outsiders for? Ever heard of keeping your dirty laundry to yourself?!”
Jasmine had already made up her mind about what to do next, but before she took action, she needed to know where Margaret stood.
“Margaret,” Jasmine asked, “would you like to come with me?”
Margaret looked confused. “Go where? Back to the Vance estate?”
“No, not there. To my place. You’ll live with me from now on.”
As the weight of the offer sank in, Margaret glanced over at her worthless son.
“But there is one condition,” Jasmine emphasized firmly. “You can never give him another dime.”
Otherwise, they would just be pouring money into a bottomless pit.
Margaret wrestled with the thought for a moment before hardening her resolve. She nodded. “Mrs. Vance, if you’ll have me, I’ll happily look after you for the rest of my days!”
Gary spat on the floor. “She’s my mother! You think you can just take her away without my permission? Not a chance!”
