“What do you mean, ‘what do you mean?” Eleanor replied. “We’re almost at your front door.”

Panic flared in Jasmine’s chest. “Why on earth would you go to Kingsley Bay?”

“Why are you getting so worked up?” Eleanor asked. “It’s perfectly normal for in-laws to visit each other. Besides, your husband did us a massive favor, so it’s only right that I come thank them in person.”

Frantic, Jasmine threw the car into drive and hit the gas. If that six hundred million dollar/secret got out. she was dead. Both sides would demand to know exactly where that kind of money had come from. She was so desperate to get back that she nearly ran a red light.

When she finally burst into the house, Eleanor was already seated in the living room. Hugh was right there beside her, and Madeline was playing host.

Seeing Jasmine walk in, Madeline looked up, her tone noticeably softer than usual. “Speak of the devil. Jasmine, we were just talking about you.”

Jasmine walked over, her heart hammering against her ribs. “Mom, why didn’t you let me know you were coming?”

Dressed in her usual high-end elegance, Eleanor shrugged. “I was just passing through the neighborhood and decided to stop by.”

Jasmine frowned slightly. “Still, Mom, you should have called first.”

“Oh, honestly, this girl,” Eleanor started, instinctively wanting to snap at her, but she caught herself, remembering where she was. “Madeline doesn’t mind at all, so why are you making a fuss?”

Jasmine glanced at Madeline, who was currently the picture of warmth and gentleness. Anyone who didn’t know her would think she was the sweetest woman alive. She really was an incredible actress.

Madeline smiled warmly. “Young people today just like their independence. We’re getting old, Eleanor- we just can’t keep up with them anymore.”

“You don’t look old at all,” Eleanor flattered. “In fact, you look about my age.”

Madeline let out a delighted laugh. “Oh, you’re far too kind. I only wish I looked as young as you.”

“I mean every word,” Eleanor insisted.

Both women were hiding their own agendas, trading compliments that were as polished as they were fake.

Hugh caught Jasmine’s eye with a smirk and raised his voice intentionally. “Jasmine, what took you so long? I’ve been waiting ages for you.”

Before Jasmine could reply, Chloe came rushing down the stairs. Ignoring the guests completely, she headed straight toward Felicity’s room.

“Chloe, where are your manners? We have guests,” Madeline chided, feigning disapproval.

Chapter 69 Thank Them in Person

I’m going to see Leo,” Chloe said, clutching a toy. “I bought something for him.”

“Come over and greet everyone first.”

Chloe reluctantly turned around, her eyes flashing with disdain as she looked at Eleanor and Hugh Hello.” she mumbled half-heartedly, before immediately running off.

I’m so sorry, she’s completely spoiled,” Madeline apologized smoothly.

Eleanor was quick to smooth it over. “Oh, she’s far better behaved than my Hugh.”

Hugh smirked, though a shadow of irritation crossed his eyes. He had just noticed Chloe deliberately shove Jasmine’s shoulder as she passed, her glare full of provocation. There wasn’t an ounce of respect for an older sister-in-law.

It seemed Jasmine’s life with the Vance family wasn’t nearly as perfect as his mother claimed.

Just then, a baby’s sharp cry echoed from down the hall.

“Gloria, go check on Leo,” Madeline said, her voice laced with worry. “Why is he crying so hard?” Turning back to Eleanor, she sighed comfortably. “Ever since we got this great-grandson, my old bones finally have something to look forward to. I used to worry the Vance line would end with Julian, but thank goodness his wife managed to leave us an heir.”

The underlying barb was impossible to miss-a blatant dig at Jasmine’s failure to get pregnant. Yet, Eleanor could only pretend to be oblivious, casting a sharp, blaming look at her daughter.

Hugh leaned back, speaking with a lazy, deliberate drawl. “You know, Grandma, when a couple can’t have kids, you can’t just blame the woman. For all we know, the man might be the one with the problem.”

Eleanor couldn’t even move fast enough to stop him.

Jasmine is in perfect health,” Hugh added confidently.

Madeline opened her mouth, nearly blurting out the truth. The fact that Felicity’s baby belonged to a secret donor was a strictly guarded Vance family secret. To the rest of the world, Leo was Julian’s posthumous child.
