For another, she wanted Hugh to get to know Silas better so Silas might help him out in the future.
Eleanor was playing a very calculated game, and Jasmine saw right through it. But since she couldn’t reveal the truth about the money, she just had to play it by ear.
Right on cue, Silas walked through the front door. He froze for a second, clearly surprised by the unexpected guests.
Eleanor didn’t wait for him to speak. Instead, she eagerly greeted him first. “Silas, you’re back.”
Silas handed his coat to the maid and walked over, completely ignoring Eleanor. He addressed his grandmother instead. “Grandma.”
Eleanor’s smile stiffened. It was a humiliating snub after being so overly polite, and even Jasmine found i a bit hard to watch.
Madeline made no effort to hide her smug pride. “Yes, he’s back. Eleanor came all this way just to see you, Silas. Sit down and keep her company.”
Silas did as he was told.
Eleanor forced her smile back into place. “Hugh, where are your manners? Say hello!”
Hugh lazily muttered Silas’s name.
“Is this Hugh?” Silas asked. He had only met him once at the wedding, so his memory was hazy.
“Yes,” Eleanor chimed in. “You two only met briefly at the wedding before he went back abroad to finish his studies. He just returned a few days ago, so I thought I’d bring him by to see you-and to show him what real success looks like.”
Silas naturally fed on that kind of flattery. “Well, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. With Arthur as his father, I’m sure he’ll do just fine.”
“He’ll still need plenty of your guidance and advice in the future,” Eleanor said.
“Hugh is welcome to drop by more often,” Silas offered.
That was exactly what Eleanor had been angling for. “Did you hear that, Hugh? Silas said you should visit more. Make sure you learn as much as you can from him.”
Hugh didn’t say a word. He just turned his head away, watching Chloe strut proudly out of the nursery.
“Silas, Leo seems to have grown again!” Chloe piped up. “And he’s starting to look exactly like—”
“Chloe!” Madeline snapped.
Chloe shut her mouth instantly. She panicked, realizing she had nearly let the secret slip right in front of their guests.

Jasmine scoffed internally. Chloe really couldn’t keep her mouth shut. While Leo’s features shared a passing resemblance to Felicity, he didn’t look a single bit like Silas.
“Sílas, I actually came over today specifically to thank you,” Eleanor announced suddenly.
Silas looked confused. “Thank me?”
“Yes, for helping us with-”
“Mom!” Jasmine interrupted loudly.
Eleanor jumped, startled. “Goodness, girl, what is wrong with-”
“Mom,” Jasmine said quickly, shooting her a desperate look. “Silas has had a long day at work. Let’s not bother him while he’s trying to rest.”
Everyone in the room had their own hidden agenda. Playing along with all these mind games was becoming exhausting.
Eleanor caught on quickly and chimed in, “Right, of course. I should probably get going anyway. Your father is waiting for me at home for dinner.”
Madeline offered a polite, if empty, invitation. “You’ve only just arrived. Why don’t you stay for dinner?”
“Oh, no, thank you,” Eleanor declined. “Jasmine’s father is home by himself, and I don’t like leaving him alone.”
“All right then, I won’t keep you,” Madeline said. “Silas, go see Eleanor out.”
Silas murmured an agreement, but Jasmine cut in. “No need. I’ll do it. Let Silas rest.”
Silas played the part of the doting husband perfectly. “Alright, you go then. It’s chilly outside, so put a coat
on.”
Forcing herself to keep up the act, Jasmine smiled. “Okay.”
As they were leaving, Hugh’s gaze lingered on Chloe for a long moment. Chloe just rolled her eyes at him. She couldn’t stand a single member of the Thorne family.
Jasmine walked Eleanor to her car.
As soon as they reached the vehicle, Eleanor turned to her. “Why didn’t you let me speak back there?” Jasmine already had her excuse ready. “Silas kept the loan a secret from Madeline and Victoria. If you had brought it up, it would have put him in a really difficult position.”
“You silly girl, why didn’t you tell me sooner?” Eleanor grumbled.
