Chapter 71 Get Back at Them

And just like that. Eleanor was ushered into the car.

Before getting in himself, Hugh suddenly leaned down and whispered in Jasmine’s ear.

“I’ll get back at them for you for today.”

Jasmine didn’t understand what he meant. But she didn’t care enough to ask, brushing it off as nothing more than a child’s empty promise.

Jasmine turned and stepped back into the house. Just as she was about to close the door, Madeline’s piercing voice drifted over-completely dropping the sweet, amiable act she had been putting on earlier.

Now, her tone was dripping with utter contempt as she spoke to Silas.

“Well, hell must have frozen over. Eleanor hasn’t set foot in this house once in three years, but suddenly she remembers we exist? You think she just happened to be in the neighborhood? She came here on purpose. Now that the Thornes are financially ruined, she’s desperate to latch onto the Vance family name. She even brought her own son along to network with you. It’s a transparent attempt to cozy up and smooth the way for him. Back when the Thornes were riding high, I never saw Eleanor act this subservient. I despise people like her. Does she really think that just because her daughter married into our family, she can ride her coattails to get what she wants? That daughter of hers doesn’t have a shred of influence in this house, yet Eleanor expects to benefit?”

Through it all, Silas didn’t say a single word to defend her.

Jasmine gripped the doorknob so hard her knuckles turned white. She was terrified that if she lost control for even a second, she would storm in there and slap Madeline across the face.

Inside, Madeline quickly shifted gears.

“The company just lost several key technical staff all at once, and I smell a rat. Silas, you need to look into this thoroughly. See if there’s a mole in the company helping Ethan undercut you.”

Only then did Silas speak up.

“I know, Grandma.”

Jasmine stayed outside in the freezing air for a while before finally heading back in. It was the only way to suppress the anger bubbling up inside her.

When she walked in, Silas’s concern sounded genuine enough.

“What took you so long? And didn’t I tell you to bundle up?”

Jasmine felt nothing but disdain for this meaningless coddling. “I was catching up with my mom.”

Silas followed her into the bedroom. “Eleanor looked like she wanted to say something else before she left. What was it?”

Jasmine ground her teeth. “She wanted to say thank you to the Vances for keeping me around”

Sensing that she was on the verge of snapping, Silas grew defensive. “You heard what Grandma said, didn’t you?”

“I’m not deaf,” Jasmine retorted.

“Just ignore it. There’s no need to take it to heart,” Silas said. “Besides, Grandma was the one who said it. Why are you taking your anger out on me?”

Jasmine took a deep breath. “Silas…”

Silas waited for her to finish, but the words never came.

Forget it. There was no point in arguing.

Silas stepped up to her and gently cupped her cheek. “What’s wrong?”

Jasmine fought down her revulsion.

“Nothing,” she said. “I just wanted to let you know I reached out to Caleb. He said he’d get in touch with you.”

Silas immediately pulled her into his arms. “Jasmine, once things settle down at work, let’s go on a honeymoon.”

Jasmine stiffened. “A honeymoon? Where did this come from?”

“Consider it a reward,” Silas said.

Jasmine kept her arms glued to her sides. She loathed his embrace, but she couldn’t push him away. “There’s no need. You’re so busy-if you get any free time, you’d be better off resting at home.”

Suddenly, she felt a profound wave of disgust for this passive, suffocating life. The two months she had left felt like an eternity.

Silas finally released Jasmine, but then affectionately pinched the tip of her button nose.

“My wife is getting sweeter and more thoughtful by the day.”

The word wife coming from his mouth sent a violent shiver of disgust straight down her spine. Just as he leaned in to plant a rewarding kiss on her lips, Jasmine spoke up hurriedly.

“Silas, I want to go see Leo.”

It worked like a charm. Silas beamed.
