Chapter 72 I’ll Look My Best

Chapter 72 I’ll Look My Best

The child wasn’t to blame for any of this. He was just an innocent bystander.

Silas stepped up behind her. “Look at that. He seems to really like you.”

Jasmine silently pulled her finger away.

Watching the two of them standing side by side over the crib stung Felicity’s eyes. To anyone else, they would have looked like the proud parents.

“Jasmine,” Felicity chimed in, “Silas told me you’re both going to the charity auction tomorrow night. Make sure you dress up beautifully so Silas looks good.”

Jasmine tore her gaze away from the baby. Her heart still wavered at the thought of drawing the child’s blood. But if she didn’t, there would be no way to get a DNA test done.

Seeing her silence, Silas nudged her. “Felicity is talking to you.”

Jasmine forced another smile. “A wife is a reflection of her husband, after all. Of course, I’ll look my best. I wouldn’t want to embarrass him.”

She deliberately looped her arm through Silas’s. “Right, honey?”

The pet name instantly put Silas in high spirits. “You don’t even need to try, sweetheart. You’re a natural beauty-you could never embarrass me.” ノ

Jasmine nearly gagged. If Silas had spoken to her like this in the past, she would have been over the moon. Now, it just made her sick.

But she had to play the part. Since she was already here, she wasn’t about to let the mistress have an easy time of it. Besides, she still had a score to settle with Margaret.

“By the way, Silas, there’s something I think you should know,” Jasmine said.

Silas was busy teasing the baby. “What’s that?”

“I found Margaret.”

Silas froze. “What were you looking for her for?”

“I know you didn’t really want her to leave,” Jasmine said gently. “After all, she took care of you devotedly for so many years and treated you like her own son. Your relationship with her goes way beyond just master and servant.”

Silas looked a little uncomfortable. “Why bring this up now?”

“I also know you had your own reservations and felt your hands were tied. I understand that, and so does Margaret.”

Silas sighed. “She probably hates me.”

“No, she doesn’t hate you at all.”

“How do you know?”

Jasmine gave a meaningful smile. “Because I already smoothed things over with her on your behalf. I even gave her the savings I’d scraped together over the years as compensation, and I plan on visiting her often. You don’t have to worry about her anymore.”

Jasmine deliberately kept quiet about the fact that she had moved Margaret into Moonlight Terrace.

As she spoke, she made a point of watching Felicity. Felicity’s face went through a whole spectrum of colors, her mouth twitching as if she wanted to speak but couldn’t. It was quite a sight.

Silas looked as though a massive weight had been lifted from his shoulders. “What made you think of doing all this?”

Jasmine smiled softly. “Because you’re my husband, and because I know how helpless you felt. I just did what you couldn’t do yourself.”

Right in front of Felicity, Silas took Jasmine’s hand. “Jasmine, you…”

How had he never noticed before just how incredibly reasonable and understanding his wife was?

Jasmine smiled beautifully. “There’s no need for formalities between us. Anything I do for you is only natural.” Then, she shifted gears. “And don’t hold a grudge against Felicity. Even though she’s the one who went running to Grandma to tattle on Margaret, well…”

Jasmine’s expression turned sorrowful. “Margaret only did what she did because she was worried about me. You know my health hasn’t been great lately. She was just terrified that going a whole day without food would make me worse, and then I wouldn’t be able to accompany you to any upcoming events. That’s why she did it.”

The piece of information seemed to make everything click into place for Silas.

This was exactly the reaction Jasmine wanted. If Felicity could play the game of driving wedges between people, so could she. It was time to give her a taste of her own medicine.

Silas glanced over at Felicity, his eyes full of irritation and blame.

With her mission accomplished, Jasmine gracefully extracted herself.

“Alright, Silas, I need to get some rest. The doctor said I can’t stay up late, or my recovery will take even longer.” She added smoothly, “Why don’t you stay and keep Felicity company for a while? Now that Julian is gone and Leo is still so small, she must be so lonely every day. This is exactly when she needs someone

around.”
