Felicity caught her breath, panic coursing through her. “How could you think that of me? Silas, how could you be so cruel!”

Silas sighed heavily. “Maybe I’m just overthinking it.”

Felicity kept sobbing. “Silas, maybe I should just move back to the house I shared with Julian. Staying here I’m only getting in the way. I’m just a burden to you.”

A memory flashed across Silas’s mind. He remembered seeing her right after Julian passed away, sitting all alone by the window of her empty marital home, weeping in utter despair.

His heart had shattered into a million pieces back then. Seeing the woman he loved reduced to suck miserable isolation had pained him beyond words. He had sworn to himself at that very moment that he would take care of her and protect her forever.

Remembering that, Silas softened. He reached out and gently brushed the tears from her cheeks.

“Alright, I shouldn’t have said that. Don’t cry anymore.”

Felicity immediately buried her face in his chest. “Silas, I have no one left but you. When you doubt me like that, it hurts more than dying.”

Silas could only soothe her with gentle words. “I won’t doubt you again. I was just overthinking. Come on, cheer up. At the charity auction tomorrow night, if you see anything you like, I’ll bid on it for you.”

Felicity felt a surge of secret triumph. “Really?”

Silas instantly regretted the promise. He had said the exact same thing to his wife. But the words were out, and he couldn’t take them back now.

He forced himself to follow through. “The charity gala will be live-streamed tomorrow. You can watch the items up for auction, and if anything catches your eye, just let me know.”

The annual charity gala was held in the grand ballroom of the Celestial Garden. Despite the biting cold outside, the turnout was massive, and the atmosphere inside was buzzing with excitement.

Everyone had dressed to the nines. The women were dripping in diamonds and elaborate makeup, while the men looked every bit the part of high society in their tailored suits. Although the invitation read “charity auction,” everyone knew the real goal of the evening was rubbing shoulders with the elite and securing business deals.

Silas stepped out and opened the car door. Jasmine emerged wearing a spaghetti-strap evening gown that faded beautifully into shades of ice blue. The dress was heavily embellished with exquisite beadwork and crystals, its structured, flawless silhouette accentuating her perfect proportions. With her delicate features and glowing skin, she radiated an effortless, striking elegance.

Even now, Silas was still spellbound by her breathtaking beauty. He had never realized his wife could look this stunning.

Silas offered his open palm, hoping to hold her hand. Instead, Jasmine slipped her hand under his armi hooking it through his elbow as they walked into the venue together.

Trailing behind them, Chloe looked thoroughly miserable. Determined not to be outshone by Jasmine she had gone out of her way to wear a haute couture gown and hired a famous stylist for her hair and makeup. Yet, despite her best efforts, she was still completely eclipsed.

“Silas,” Chloe called out, lifting her hem as she hurried to catch up. “Wait up for me.”

Silas kept his voice low. “Once we’re inside, watch your manners. Don’t say or do anything foolish. If you do, you embarrass the entire Vance family.”

Chloe pouted. “I get it. You’ve been lecturing me the whole ride here.”

Jasmine scanned the room, her eyes locking onto a familiar face. It was Zack. However, Ethan was nowhere to be seen. It made sense; he probably had no appetite for these superficial social gatherings. Zack gave Jasmine a subtle nod, and she politely acknowledged him in return.

When Theodore arrived, he carried himself with the air of a reigning monarch. Sterling Group’s roots were in logistics, but Theodore had recognized the vast potential of artificial intelligence and was now expanding into the field. Naturally, the partnership between the Sterling and Vance families had caused quite a stir in the business world.

Yet, Theodore had started out doing odd jobs with very little formal education. He had clawed his way to the top purely on grit, ruthlessness, and a willingness to take risks. Because of this, no matter how many designer labels he wore, he couldn’t quite hide his coarse, unrefined edges. Standing beside him, Silas suddenly looked much more aristocratic.

Silas stepped forward to greet him first. “Theodore.”

Theodore’s gaze, however, lingered on Jasmine. His look was far from friendly.
