“Okay.” Jasmine replied.

As soon as she turned around, she noticed Chloe scanning the crowd. She was clearly searching for someone-no doubt the entire reason she had insisted on tagging along tonight.

Jasmine gave a knowing smile. “Looking for someone?”

“None of your business,” Chloe snapped.

“He’s not here.”

Chloe froze. “You know who I’m looking for?”

“Ethan.”

“How could you possibly know that?”

“Back at the title company, your eyes were practically glued to him,” Jasmine said.

Chloe let out a sharp huff.

Amused, Jasmine decided to press a little further. “You like him?”

To her surprise, Chloe didn’t even try to deny it. “Yeah, I do. What of it?”

At least she was upfront about it.

Jasmine offered a gentle warning. “Did you ever bother to ask if he has a fiancée?”

Chloe didn’t care in the slightest. “Of course, I know he has a fiancée. But so what? A fiancée is just a ‘not- yet-wife. It’s not like they’re married. Even married people get divorced, let alone people who are just engaged.”

Jasmine paused to consider this.

Well, technically, she couldn’t argue with that logic.

“So,” Jasmine said, “you’re planning to pursue him?”

Disappointed at not finding her target, Chloe finally stopped scanning the room. “Yeah! Is there a problem with that?”

Jasmine smiled faintly. “No, not at all. Whatever floats your boat.” She just doubted the feeling was mutual. Chloe glanced over at Silas, who was locked in a serious conversation with Theodore. Shifting her frustration onto Jasmine, she tried to get under her skin.

“See that? Theodore really likes Silas.”

Jasmine raised an eyebrow. “And your point is?”

“My point is, don’t you feel like a third wheel?”

Instead of getting angry, Jasmine laughed and fired right back. “I’d worry more about your own marriage prospects if I were you.”

Chloe scoffed. “I’m a Vance. Men are practically lining up for me. Why on earth would I worry about that?

“The ones lining up for you are probably all bottom-of-the-barrel,” Jasmine retorted.

“Why, you-!”

“You should really try working on your personality while you’re still young,” Jasmine interrupted. “Otherwise, you’re going to end up as clearance merchandise, growing old and lonely in the Vance house.

“Jasmine!”

Losing her temper, Chloe lunged forward and shoved Jasmine. Caught off guard in her high heels, Jasmine lost her balance and stumbled backward several steps.

Fortunately, someone caught her from behind, holding her steady.

Caleb stood there in a sharp black suit, a casual, lazy smirk on his handsome face. “I just came over to say hello, but this is a hell of a welcome.”

Jasmine used his arm to steady herself. “Sorry you had to see that.”

Caleb glanced over at Chloe. “Silas’s sister?”

“Yeah,” Jasmine replied.

Caleb raised a skeptical eyebrow. “Not bad-looking, but her attitude is rotten. I guess the Vance family values leave a lot to be desired.”

Jasmine hid a smile. “She’s just spoiled.”

“Who do you think you are?” Chloe snapped, visibly annoyed. “Who talks like that? You’re completely out of line!”

“Out of line? I was thinking more along the lines of cracking some skulls,” Caleb said. “I actually just got out of prison, and my hands are itching for a fight.”

Chloe gasped, taking a step back. “You… you were in prison?”

“Yep. Murder.”

“You killed someone…?”

Caleb flashed a sinister smirk. “Oh, yeah. Not just murder, either-I chopped the body up into little bloody pieces, and then—”
