But given Caleb’s standing, Silas could hardly afford to make a scene. “I wonder what my sister could have done to make you look so displeased, Mr. Grant,” Silas said.

Caleb smiled, his expression hovering somewhere between genuine and performative. “Angry? Not at all. I simply cannot stand the sight of it. A younger sister showing not a shred of respect for her own sister-in- law, and going so far as to physically strike her… Mr. Vance, wouldn’t you say that is a little much?”

Jasmine nearly burst out laughing.

Calling a shove “assault” was a bit of a stretch.

“Assault?!” Chloe protested. “You’re exaggerating! I just gave her a little push!”

Caleb snapped his fingers. “And there it is, Mr. Vance. She confessed.”

Realizing she had walked right into a trap, Chloe fumed. “Why, you…”

“Chloe!” Silas barked in a low, furious voice. “Go find your seat. Now.”

Chloe stamped her foot, turning to leave.

“Hold on,” Caleb called out. “You’re leaving without apologizing?”

Chloe had no intention of doing so and hurried away as fast as she could.

Right in front of Caleb, Silas was the picture of a devoted husband. “Are you all right? Are you hurt anywhere?”

Jasmine forced a tight smile. “I’m fine. I just wasn’t paying attention, and it’s hard to keep your balance in these heels. I almost took a spill, that’s all.”

“Good, as long as you are not hurt,” Silas said. “Do not worry. I will absolutely have a word with her when we get back.” Jasmine rolled her eyes. Silas was talking out of both sides of his mouth. As if he would actually scold her when they got home.

Turning to Caleb, Silas struck up a conversation. “Mr. Grant, out by yourself tonight?”

“Of course,” Caleb replied, not thinking much of it.

“You didn’t bring your girlfriend?” Silas probed.

“Girlfriend?” Caleb echoed, confused.

Jasmine quickly cut in. “Mr. Grant, where is Sierra?”

Caleb was completely bewildered. “She-”

Before he could finish, a hand slipped through his arm, cutting him off.

Sierra appeared at his side, radiant in a diamond-studded silver evening gown. She blinked her large. dewy eyes and called out to him in a softened, pitched-up voice. “Caleb.”

Caleb stared at her as though she had grown a second head. He opened his mouth to speak, but a sharp pinch to his arm stopped him short. Something seemed to click, and his expression shifted into an indulgent smile. “What took you so long? I have been waiting for ages.”

Sierra gave him a charming, flirtatious smile. “You know how much I hate these kinds of events. If my dad hadn’t forced me, I wouldn’t have come at all.” Turning her attention to Silas, she greeted him, “Mr. Vance. long time no see.”

The words died in Silas’s throat. He had wanted to confirm whether Sierra really was Caleb’s girlfriend, buy it seemed he didn’t need to ask anymore.

“What a coincidence,” Caleb said. “Mr. Vance was just asking about my girlfriend, and right on cue, here

you are.”

Sierra gave him a playful swat. “That’s what you get for running off without me. If you do it again, I’m going to be really mad at you.”

Jasmine couldn’t help herself; she turned away to hide a smirk. The two of them were putting on quite a performance, each trying to outdo the other.

Thank goodness Caleb hadn’t blown her cover right then and there. If he had, she would have had an impossible time explaining why a drunk Caleb had hugged her the other night.

“By the way, Mr. Vance,” Caleb said, “there are a few friends here tonight I’d love to introduce you to. If you’re not too busy, shall we go say hello?”

Silas was more than willing. He shot Jasmine an approving look as they prepared to leave.

After taking a few steps, Caleb looked back over his shoulder and flashed Jasmine a knowing wink.

Jasmine’s smile only widened.

It didn’t take long for Caleb to return.

“All taken care of,” Caleb said. “Now you have something to report back to your husband.”

| Jasmine let out a cold laugh. “Don’t use that word. It makes my skin crawl.”

Caleb paused for a moment, caught slightly off guard. “No wonder you told me to just play along. But… would one of you mind explaining to me when exactly I became Sierra’s boyfriend?”

Sierra cracked a grin. “It was a special situation. I was just running my mouth.” “Running your mouth?” Caleb repeated.

Sierra gave him a quick rundown of what had happened.

When she finished, Caleb sighed. “Fine. Who told me to have a soft spot for my precious Jasmine? Otherwise, there is no way I would ever play your boyfriend.”
