Jasmine didn’t even want to bother figuring out what Silas really felt about her. “Whether he cares or not doesn’t matter to me anymore.”

Caleb looked surprised. “Why? Are you planning on getting a divorce?”

Jasmine immediately regretted speaking so carelessly.

Sierra quickly intervened. “Mind your own business. That’s Jasmine’s personal matter, so stop prying.

Caleb’s rakish smile returned just as fast as it had vanished. “Guess I’m still an outsider. Fine, I won’t ask He let out a dramatic, theatrical sigh. “If I’d known it would be like this, I wouldn’t have bothered coming. I should’ve stayed home and kept Ethan company instead. Now look at me, single and miserable out here in the cold.”

Jasmine couldn’t help but ask, “Ethan isn’t coming today?”

“Can’t make it. He’s practically on his deathbed,” Caleb replied.

Jasmine gasped, her heart skipping a beat. “What do you mean, deathbed? Don’t say things like that.”

Caleb couldn’t resist teasing her. “Why so tense? Why do you care if he kicks the bucket?”

“Because we’re all friends,” Jasmine said defensively. “You too. If you were on your deathbed tomorrow, I’d be just as worried.”

Caleb grinned. “Knowing that, I could die a happy man.”

Sierra slapped his arm. “Can you stop being so morbid? Enough with the life and death talk, use your head. Now tell us, what actually happened to Ethan?”

Caleb finally dropped the act and got serious. “The doctor said it’s a stomach bug. He spent all of yesterday glued to the toilet. He’s doing a lot better today, but he’s completely wiped out, so he’s at home resting.”

“How did Ethan even get a stomach bug?” Sierra asked, frowning. “Doesn’t he have people looking after his meals and everything?”

“Of course he does,” Caleb said. “Which is why it’s a mystery. Who knows what the hell he ate?”

Jasmine let out a sigh of relief. “Well, at least it’s just a stomach bug. It would be terrible if it were food poisoning.”

“I’ll take that as a blessing,” Caleb said. “Look at you, always knowing exactly what to say.”

Jasmine couldn’t help but chuckle. “I just mean I’m glad he’s okay.” She checked the time. “The gala is about to start. I’m going to run to the restroom.”

“I’ll come with you,” Sierra offered.

Jasmine smiled and shook her head, turning her down. Sierra was wearing towering heels today. For

someone who rarely wore them, surviving more than three hours in four-inch stilettos was pure torture

“No need, go find a seat. I’ll be right back.”

In the restroom, Jasmine ran straight into Chloe, who was busy touching up her makeup. Meeting agam felt like an encounter between sworn enemies.

Chloe just couldn’t keep her mouth shut. “Did you dress like that on purpose today just to seduce men That Caleb guy looks like he’s itching to get a piece of you.”

Jasmine ignored her completely, treating her like thin air. Chloe kept rattling on and on outside the stall, but Jasmine tuned it all out.

Yet, when Jasmine finished and stepped out, Chloe was still waiting for her right by the door. Her aggressive posture was genuinely grating.

Suppressing her temper, Jasmine said coldly, “Move.”

“I’m talking to you,” Chloe snapped. “Why aren’t you answering me?”

Jasmine eyed her frostily. “Why should I?”

“Are you sleeping with Caleb? Are you trying to cheat on Silas, or have you already done it?” Chloe looked Jasmine up and down with blatant disrespect. “Dressing all sexy like this… you came here to hook up, didn’t you!”

“Chloe,” Jasmine said, her voice dropping dangerously as her patience wore thin. “I have my limits.”

Chloe,

Chloe didn’t back down at all. “What, did I hit a nerve? Getting mad because I caught you?”

With only ten minutes left until the gala started, Jasmine had no desire to waste any more time dealing with Chloe. Casting a thoroughly disgusted look at her, she tried to step around her and walk away.

But Chloe refused to let it go. She lunged forward and grabbed Jasmine’s dress, pulling hard enough that one of the straps snapped right off.

That was the last straw. Jasmine lost all control, swung her hand, and slapped Chloe squarely across the face.

Five distinct finger marks quickly flushed red against Chloe’s pale cheek. Clutching her face, she stared at Jasmine in absolute shock. “You actually dared to hit me!”
