Chapter 80 The Basement
Chapter 80 The Basement
It was better not to fight back-she couldn’t risk harming the baby in her womb.
Jasmine sidestepped Bernard’s hand. “I can walk by myself, Bernard.”
“This way, Mrs. Vance,” Bernard said politely,

Before long, Jasmine was locked away in the basement. The space served as a wine cellar, housing Silass extensive collection of fine vintages. Aside from the wine racks, the only piece of furniture was a sofa. It was originally from the living room, but Madeline had deemed the style outdated and ordered a new one, banishing this old piece to the basement. Jasmine was just grateful it was here; otherwise, she would have been forced to sleep on the floor.
The basement had no windows, leaving the artificial lights burning constantly. She was wearing only her gala dress with a coat thrown over it. She could handle it for a little while, but if she was left down here top long, the biting chill would eventually become unbearable. Jasmine sat down on the sofa and wrapped her arms around her stomach, instinctively protecting the baby in her womb.
She lit up her phone screen.
As expected, there was no service. Calling for help wasn’t an option. But then again, even if she could make a call, who would she turn to? Not even her own family would come to save her.
Upstairs, Madeline stared at Chloe’s battered face. The more she looked at her granddaughter, the more her heart ached, and the angrier she became. She was going to use this opportunity to teach Jasmine a lesson she would never forget. The girl had completely crossed the line.
Victoria, meanwhile, was still fixated on the jewelry. “Madeline, make sure she hands over that necklace. It’s worth a fortune, and it was bought entirely with Vance’s money. We can’t let her get away with keeping it.”
Madeline turned a cold glare on Silas. “Silas, what on earth possessed you to give her something so incredibly valuable?”
Silas was feeling thoroughly agitated. He couldn’t shake the image of Jasmine walking away toward the basement without a single backward glance. Her lonely, helpless figure left a tight, uncomfortable knot in
his chest.
Jasmine was clearly the one in the wrong here, so why did he feel this sudden pang of guilt over punishing her?
“Silas, your grandmother is talking to you,” Victoria prodded.
Silas snapped out of his thoughts. “I promised her I would.”
“You could have brushed her off with any cheap trinket,” Madeline snapped. “Who does she think she is to deserve something that exquisite?”
“Grandmother,” Silas countered, his irritation bleeding into his voice. “The charity gala was broadcast live. With all those people watching, if I didn’t give it to my wife, who was I supposed to give it to?”

Madeline blinked, caught off guard. “Silas, what is with that attitude?”
“I don’t have an attitude,” Silas said, completely drained. “I’m tired. I’m going to my room.”

Without another word, Silas turned and walked away. Madeline could only stare after him, her blood boiling at his dismissal.
A sudden realization struck Victoria. “Madeline, have you noticed that Silas has been acting differently toward Jasmine lately?”
Madeline scoffed. “I’m not blind. I noticed a while ago.”
“Do you think he actually likes her?”
Madeline frowned deeply. She couldn’t say for sure whether Silas had genuinely developed feelings for Jasmine, but if he had, that would spell trouble.
“Why don’t I just go and ask him, Madeline?” Victoria suggested.
“And you think he’d tell you the truth?” Madeline countered. “Can’t you see your own son isn’t on our side anymore?”
Victoria gasped. “Madeline, what are you saying? How could Silas not be on our side? Even if he’s distant with me, his own mother, he would absolutely stand by you.”
Madeline’s eyes grew sharp and calculating. “My fear is that someone has been whispering in his ear, deliberately causing a rift in this family to turn Silas against us.”
Victoria caught on immediately. “You mean Jasmine!”
“She is far more dangerous than she appears,” Madeline said. “She acts submissive on the surface, but God knows what she’s plotting behind our backs.”
Victoria dismissed the idea with a wave of her hand. “What could she possibly plot? Her own family wouldn’t lift a finger to help her. How much trouble could she really cause?”
“Don’t underestimate her,” Madeline warned coldly.
“I’m really not underestimating her, I just don’t think she has it in her.”
Madeline cut her a sharp look. “The people you look down on most are usually the most dangerous ones. They’re the ones who end up blindsiding you.”
Victoria let out a soft laugh. “Madeline, you almost sound like you’re afraid of Jasmine.”
