“If/we push Jasmine into a corner and she exposes the truth, it will be an absolute disgrace to the Vance family. We’ll be the laughingstock of high society for the rest of our lives.”
Victoria mulled this over for a long moment. “Then what do we do?”
“Keep her pacified for now,” Madeline said. “As long as she’s still Silas’s wife, she won’t dare expose us. We play the long game. I refuse to believe she can survive the Vance house forever.”.
Victoria flashed a sycophantic smile. “You’re always ten steps ahead, Madeline. Jasmine doesn’t stand a chance against you.”
Her expression then twisted into a venomous scowl. “We should leave her down in that basement all night. There’s no one left to coddle her now, and it gets freezing down there after midnight. With any luck, shell freeze to death.”
The threat had barely left Victoria’s lips when the doorbell rang.
The maid went to answer it. Staring at the unfamiliar man on the doorstep, she asked rudely, “Can I help you?”
The middle-aged man offered a warm, polite smile. “I’m looking for Mrs. Madeline Vance.”
“It’s late,” the maid snapped. “What do you want with Mrs. Vance? Who are you, anyway?”
The man handed her a business card. “Please give this to Mrs. Vance.”
Reluctantly, the maid took it.
Two minutes later, Madeline came jogging down the hallway.
“Mr. Crawford!” she cried, her scheming expression instantly vanishing into a beaming smile. “Oh my goodness, Mr. Crawford! What an honor. I had no idea you’d be paying us a visit in person.”
The man at the door was Richard Crawford, a high-ranking official at the municipal bureau. He had only recently been transferred to Rivercrest from another city, and though plenty of people had tried to curry favor with him, he had turned them all away. Madeline herself had tried using her connections to schedule a meeting with him, but to no avail. She never expected him to just show up on her doorstep.
“I apologize for dropping by so unannounced this late in the evening,” Richard said. “I hope I’m not \ intruding.”
“Not at all, Mr. Crawford! Having you here is an absolute privilege. Please, come inside.”
Turning quickly to Victoria, Madeline didn’t miss the chance to nudge her grandson. “Go get Silas. Tell him we have an important guest.”
Still completely bewildered, Victoria hurried upstairs.
Madeline had her best coffee served, but Richard didn’t waste any time. He cut straight to the chase.

“I’m here regarding tonight’s charity gala,” he said.
Madeline listened with absolute reverence.

“The Vance Group’s unexpected 250 million dollar donation at the auction caught us completely by surprise,” Richard continued. “It solved a massive financial hurdle for us. On behalf of the children with cerebral palsy who can’t afford treatment, I want to express my deepest gratitude.”
Just moments ago, Madeline had been agonizing over the lost money. Now, that resentment instantly evaporated. She never imagined the donation would bring Richard Crawford to her home just to thank her. This was bound to open a lot of doors for their network.

Instantly putting on an air of profound compassion, Madeline sighed. “To be honest, it breaks my think about those children suffering without medical care. That’s why I kept telling Silas that no matter how tight the company’s budget is, we have to give back. A true entrepreneur must support Rivercrest and do good. That’s our duty.”
Richard smiled faintly. “Rivercrest is fortunate to have business leaders with your level of social conscience, Mrs. Vance.”
Silas hurried downstairs.
“Mr. Crawford,” Madeline said smoothly, jumping up to introduce them. “This is my grandson, Silas. Silas, this is Mr. Crawford, our newly appointed municipal leader.”
Silas bowed slightly and extended his hand. “An honor to meet you, Mr. Crawford.”
Richard took a brief, measuring look at him. “Mrs. Vance certainly knows how to raise a proper gentleman. He’s quite impressive.”
Before Madeline could launch into another round of flattery, Richard added, “And where is your wife?”
The question caught everyone off guard, frozen in surprise.
“I caught the live stream of the gala tonight,” Richard explained with a smile. “It’s clear the two of you are deeply devoted to each other. I imagine your wife was a huge driving force behind that massive donation, and I really ought to thank her in person as well.”
Silas glanced sideways at Madeline.
Catching his eye, Madeline instantly masked her expression and put on a look of gentle reproach. “Silas, honestly, how could you leave Jasmine upstairs? Go bring her down.”
A wave of relief washed over Silas. “Right. I’ll go get her.”
Meanwhile, back in the room, Jasmine was curled into a tight ball on the sofa, trying desperately to trap whatever body heat she had left. But she knew it wasn’t working. If she stayed like this much longer, she was genuinely afraid she might freeze to death before morning.
“Jasmine.”
