Chapter 82 A Wonderful Girl

Jasmine’s mind pieced it together instantly.

This Mr. Crawford had to be someone of immense power and influence-the kind of heavyweight who could make Madeline completely rewrite her attitude in a heartbeat.

“Hello, Mr. Crawford,” Jasmine said politely. “I’m Jasmine.”

She pointedly avoided introducing herself as Silas’s wife.

Richard’s smile softened. “You can tell she’s a bright, lovely young woman. Though you’re already home, why are you still in your evening gown? Be careful not to catch a cold.”

Jasmine shot a deliberate glance at Madeline. “Things have been a bit chaotic since we got back, so I haven’t had a chance to change yet.”

Guilt flickered across Madeline’s face as she quickly looked away.

“Mrs. Vance, you are incredibly fortunate to have a granddaughter-in-law like her,” Richard noted.

Madeline was privately seething, but she had no choice but to force a nod. “Yes, she really is a wonderful girl.”

Richard turned back to Jasmine. “The city is hosting an awards ceremony tomorrow for the charity drive. It would be perfect if you and your husband could attend together. The local news station will be there for an interview as well.”

“We’d be honored. Thank you, Mr. Crawford,” Jasmine replied.

Instinct told her she wouldn’t be locked back in that freezing basement tonight. Mr. Crawford’s timing couldn’t have been more perfect; he was practically a savior dropped right out of the sky. Still, everything that had unfolded tonight felt entirely surreal. Each event seemed completely separate, yet somehow perfectly interconnected. Could it really all just be a coincidence?

“Well, I won’t keep you any longer,” Richard said, taking his leave.

Madeline escorted him out personally, a plastered smile never leaving her face as she fawned over him until the very last second. Jasmine found the excessive brown-nosed display a bit distasteful, but she understood it. In the business world, politics and commerce were deeply intertwined, and having a heavyweight like Crawford in their corner would make things much easier moving forward.

Just as he was about to step outside, Richard suddenly turned back to Jasmine. “Oh, and please give your father my best regards.”

There was no mistaking that the remark was meant solely for Jasmine, leaving everyone else in the room quietly unsettled.

They couldn’t help but wonder why on earth Richard would suddenly bring up Arthur. Did the two of them share some kind of close relationship?

Jasmine was just as bewildered as the rest of them, but she had the presence of mind to give a clever response. “Thank you, Mr. Crawford. I’ll be sure to tell him you asked about him.”

Nodding with satisfaction, Richard got into his car, and the vehicle quickly vanished into the night.

“If there’s nothing else, I’m heading back to the basement,” Jasmine said pointedly.

“Hold on,” Madeline snapped.

Jasmine stopped, a secret smile playing on her lips. “Is there something else? I’ve already met with the person you wanted me to see.”

Swallowing her resentment, Madeline said, “Get some rest tonight. Tomorrow, you’re accompanying Silas to the awards ceremony.”

Madeline knew Richard would be displeased if Jasmine failed to show up, and offending him was out of the question. No matter how much she loathed the idea, she had to let the basement matter drop.

“So you’re not punishing me anymore, Grandmother?” Jasmine asked.

“We will let tonight’s incident slide for now,” Madeline replied.

“Slide?”

Silas quickly stepped in to smooth things over. “Jasmine, Grandmother has already forgiven you. Hurry up and thank her.”

“Thank her?” Jasmine scoffed. “You slap me across the face and then offer me some sweet consolation, and expect me to say thank you?”

“Jasmine!” Silas hissed, lowering his voice. “Quit while you’re ahead. Take the graceful exit and drop it.”

Jasmine brushed Silas aside and looked Madeline straight in the eye. “I’ll go tomorrow. But only if you apologize to me first.”

Victoria immediately lost her temper. “Jasmine! Don’t be so ungrateful. Madeline is letting you off the hook, and you have the audacity to demand an apology from her?”

“No,” Jasmine said, her cold gaze sweeping across the room. “Not just Grandmother. All of you. Every single person in this room owes me an apology.”

“What!” Victoria raged. “Have you completely lost your mind, or are you just delusional? You want all of us to apologize to you?”

“Yes.”

“You-”

Madeline cut Victoria off. She could barely mask her disgust, but she was forced to swallow her pride. “Jasmine, you’re a smart girl. You should know when to quit and where to draw the line. You were the one in the wrong tonight, and our punishment was entirely justified.”
