Richard pulled up to the entrance of Moonlight Terrace and cut the engine.

“You little brat,” Richard grumbled. “You haven’t reached out to me in ages, and the one time you finally do, it’s to ask for a favor to bail someone out.”

Ethan gave a polite, elegant smile. “Thank you, Mr. Crawford.”

“Oh, so you do remember me,” Richard said. “You’ve been in Rivercrest for how long now? And you haven’t even dropped by the house once.”

“I’ve been busy lately.”

Richard’s smile turned knowing. “You don’t look that busy to me. Seems like you have plenty of time to look after another man’s wife.”

“Richard,” Ethan said, his tone sharpening. “I already explained it to you. She’s my business partner and a very good friend.”

Dropping the teasing act, Richard asked seriously, “How can you be so sure something actually happened to her at the Vance estate?”

Ethan laid out the facts.

“First of all, her phone is dead. The only time she ever turns it off is when she’s asleep. Second, now that the Vances’ precious daughter has been beaten up, Madeline won’t just let it slide. She’s been looking for an excuse to get rid of Jasmine for a long time, and she won’t pass up a perfect opportunity like this. I can’t be one hundred percent certain something happened, which is why I asked you to go over and check on her.”

Richard let out a soft laugh. “I can’t believe the first favor I ever did for you is something like this. You’re lucky it’s you. If anyone else asked me to do this, I’d break their legs.”

“I know you look out for me.”

“Don’t start,” Richard scoffed. “I’ve known you for years, and I’ve never heard you say anything so cheesy. It seems this Ms. Thorne-sorry, this ‘business partner’ of yours-holds a pretty special place in your heart.”

Ethan remained silent.

Richard checked his watch. “Alright, it’s getting late. I should head back.”

Ethan opened the door and stepped out of the car. “Drive safe, Mr. Crawford. I’ll definitely come visit you and Mrs. Crawford soon.”

“You’d better keep that promise.”

“I will.”

Ethan returned to his apartment.

Zack hurried over to greet him. “You’re back, Mr. Brooks.”

“How are things coming along?” Ethan asked.

“Everything is set. I’ve found the right people.”

“Good.”

“Also, the items Margaret requested have all been purchased and delivered to her.”

Ethan leaned back lazily into his chair, crossing his long legs as his gaze drifted to the city lights outside. People always said the night view here was stunning. Turns out they were right.

Zack hesitated, clearly debating whether he should speak up.

“Something on your mind?” Ethan asked.

Zack braced himself. “Mr. Brooks, why are you being so good to Ms. Thorne?”

“Do you want the truth?”

“Of course I do. But if you don’t want to say, I won’t push.”

Just as Ethan was about to speak, Zack suddenly raised his hand in a solemn vow. “But don’t worry! Whatever you tell me stays between us. I swear not a single soul will find out!”

With that, he waited anxiously for Ethan’s answer.

Ethan pulled his gaze away from the window. He lightly traced the edge of his wristwatch, a faint smile playing on his lips. “Remember when you asked me if I’d ever had an unrequited crush?”

Zack nodded. “Yeah, but what does that have to do with-” He froze mid-sentence, his mouth hanging open for a long moment. “Mr. Brooks… you… You don’t mean…”

“I do.”

Zack stood paralyzed in shock before suddenly slapping his own face.

It wasn’t a dream. Mr. Brooks had a crush on Ms. Thorne? Oh my god. This was an even bigger bombshell than finding out Ms. Thorne was “Storm.”

Being quick-witted, Zack rapidly connected the dots. “Mr. Brooks, did you fall for her back when you found out Ms. Thorne was Storm?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you pursue her back then?”

“Because I lacked confidence.”

“What?!” Zack gasped, completely floored. “Mr. Brooks, did I hear that right? You lacked confidence? You’re
