Hanging up, he looked at Jasmine, frantically trying to explain. “Leo suddenly came down with a high fever. They’re on their way to the hospital right now, so I’m going down to meet them. I’ll be back as soon as I handle this.”
Jasmine watched blankly as Silas rushed away.
If she guessed correctly, he wouldn’t be coming back.
And she was right. Silas never returned.
Hours later, Jasmine received a single text from him: [Leo has a high fever and a lung infection. They’re admitting him. I won’t be able to make it back tonight.]
Jasmine glanced at the screen, didn’t bother to reply, and deleted the message.
Jasmine stayed at the hospital until past eight in the evening. It wasn’t until her stomach started growling that she realized how quickly the time had flown. Though she had no appetite, she forced herself to eat something. After all, the little life inside her needed nourishment. Perhaps sensing its mother’s pain and distress, the little one had been quiet for a while now, and even the faint ache in her abdomen had finally subsided.
Jasmine took the elevator downstairs. It was empty at first, but when it stopped on the ninth floor, a crowd of people suddenly surged inside. Jasmine was shoved straight into the corner. To protect her baby, she quickly turned around to face the wall, keeping her back to the crowd.
Just as the elevator doors closed, a choked voice rang out.
“Silas, is the baby going to be okay?”
Jasmine froze and glanced over her shoulder.
Talk about a small world.
The speaker was indeed Felicity. Even though she was bundled up tightly with a mask covering most of her face, leaving only her eyes visible, Jasmine would recognize her anywhere. Silas was standing right next to her, his hand resting on her back to shield her from the crowding.
“Don’t worry, the baby will be fine,” Silas comforted her softly. “Even the attending physician said it’s nothing serious.”
Felicity leaned against his chest, looking fragile and helpless. “I’m so sorry, Silas. I didn’t take good care of him.”
“We just talked about this,” Silas said. “It’s not your fault, so stop blaming yourself.”
“I was just afraid you’d be angry with me.”
“How could I be? I’m just worried about you. You haven’t fully recovered yet, so what if you catch a cold out here?”

“I won’t,” Felicity replied. “Look at me, I’m practically wrapped up like a mummy.” She let out a heavy sigh “But it breaks my heart to think about him having to stay in the hospital for seven days. He’s still so small. When I saw the needle go into his arm to draw his blood earlier, my heart was bleeding.”
Before Silas could speak, a bystander chimed in. She was likely a mother herself and could deeply relate.
“When a child hurts, the mother suffers twice as much. That’s just how we are as mothers-we can handle any hardship, but we can’t bear to see our children suffer. Don’t worry too much, though. It’s perfectly normal for babies to get sick since their immune systems are still developing.”
“Thank you for the kind words,” Felicity replied politely. Her sweet, sensible demeanor instantly charmed the stranger.
“At least you have such a loving husband by your side,” the woman continued. “Look at me—I’ve been taking care of my kid in the hospital all by myself for the past few days. My useless husband does nothing but tell me how busy he is.”
Hearing this, Felicity felt a quiet surge of joy. She couldn’t help but look up at the handsome man beside her. Silas didn’t correct the woman, calmly accepting the misunderstanding. Felicity could barely contain her delight.
When the elevator reached the first floor, the crowd dispersed. Jasmine was the last one to step out, deliberately lingering for a moment before walking away. She had no desire to let those two ruin her day any further.
But Murphy’s Law always finds a way. The more you want to avoid something, the more it tracks you down.
Jasmine stopped dead in her tracks and stepped back around the corner.
It was Silas and Felicity again.
The zipper on Felicity’s collar had come undone, so Silas carefully zipped it back up for her, worried she might catch a cold.
Felicity seized the opportunity to speak up. “Silas, are you sure you shouldn’t be with Jasmine? Her father is in the hospital, after all. Won’t she be angry if you don’t show up?”
“Jasmine isn’t that petty,” Silas replied dismissively. “Besides, she should know what takes priority right
now.”
“But aren’t you worried about her father?” Felicity asked.
