Taking the food, Jasmine pulled out her phone to call him. She wanted to at least say thank you. But on second thought, a simple thank you felt far too cheap. It would be better to properly repay him once all of this was over.
Jasmine forced herself to eat. The meal consisted of a boiled egg, a glass of milk, half a cob of sweet corn, and a slice of oatmeal bread. It was clean, perfectly balanced nutritionally, and looked nothing like standard takeout.
Half an hour later, the doors to the intensive care unit opened.
Jasmine bolted to her feet. “Dr. Cole, how is my father?”
“He’s stable for now,” Harrison replied. “I’ll continue the acupuncture treatments over the next couple of days. If all goes well, there’s a very good chance he will wake up.”
His words brought tears of joy to Jasmine’s eyes.
God was merciful; He wasn’t going to take away the only family member left in the world who truly cared about her.
Just then, Silas called. Jasmine rejected it immediately.
The phone rang repeatedly, relentlessly, until she finally forced herself to answer.
“Leo had a high fever last night, and I just couldn’t leave him,” Silas said. “That’s why I didn’t make it over. You’re not mad at me, are you?”
Jasmine threw his own words back at him. “Why would I be mad? I know exactly what takes priority.”
Silas hesitated for a moment. “We really are on the same page, then, I knew you’d understand what’s more important.”
“So, whether my father lives or dies isn’t important?” Jasmine asked coldly.
“That’s not what I-”
“Actually, it makes sense,” Jasmine interrupted. “The child carries on the Vance family line, after all. I’m just an outsider, and my father has nothing to do with you, so of course he doesn’t matter.”
She hung up on him, unable to stomach his hypocrisy for another second.
Just then, a nurse wheeled a cart past.
Jasmine glanced over idly, but her eyes locked onto the blood samples sitting on the tray.
Blood?
She let out a cold laugh. She was going to find out for herself whether this precious Vance family treasure was actually a Vance at all.

That evening, Jasmine headed up to the ninth floor. Leo was staying in a VIP room, which made him easy to find.
Staring at the door, the conversation she had overheard between Silas and Felicity echoed in her mind. again. She didn’t want to hate them, but she couldn’t help it.
Only Linda was inside when Jasmine pushed the door open.
Seeing her, Linda quickly stood up to greet her. “Mrs. Vance.”
Jasmine glanced past her at the soundly sleeping child. “Thanks for looking after him.”
“Of course, Mrs. Vance. What brings you by?”
“I just wanted to see how the baby is doing.”
“Fortunately, it’s nothing too serious,” Linda said. “But he has to be on an IV every day, which is heartbreaking to watch.”
“You’ve had your hands full.”
“It’s no trouble at all.”
Jasmine asked, feigning casual interest, “Where is everyone? Why are you all by yourself?”
“Madeline and the others went home.”
“Have you been the only one staying with him the past couple of days?”
“Yes, it’s just been me.”
That struck Jasmine as odd.
Madeline was old and lacked the stamina for overnight hospital stays. Victoria was entirely unreliable and selfish. Silas had to go to the office every day and needed his rest. She could rationalize all of their absences, but for Felicity- the child’s own mother-to completely wash her hands of the situation seemed incredibly careless.
Jasmine casually pulled open a drawer, but unfortunately, it was empty.
“Linda, I completely forgot-what’s my nephew’s blood type again?”
Too simple-minded to suspect anything, Linda didn’t think twice. “I think it’s type A.”
Silas was AB, and Felicity was B. A type A child was biologically possible. D
Linda stifled a yawn.
Taking the cue, Jasmine said, “Linda, why don’t you get some sleep? I’ll watch him for a bit.”
Linda hesitated. “No, it’s fine, I can power through.”
