Darion climbed back into the car. His handsome face was darker than the night sky outside, and the air inside the vehicle turned to ice the moment the door shut.

They drove for some distance in silence before he finally spoke. “Don’t waste your time. Whatever you’ve been up to, I’ll find out sooner or later.”

Thalia turned her head toward the window and refused to acknowledge him.

Darion’s brows drew together as he glanced at the back of her head, a suffocating tightness building in his chest.

The image of Thalia sitting across from Matthew at dinner surfaced in his mind, her lips curved in a gentle smile, her eyes soft and warm. His stomach turned just thinking about it.

‘How long has it been since she smiled at me like that?’ he wondered, the thought twisting something deep inside him.

He still remembered their anniversary night, how she had clung to him the entire evening, unwilling to let go.

And yet so little time had passed since then.

Their relationship had been turned completely upside down, and he could not make sense of how they had gotten here.

He was not used to it.

The car pulled into the underground garage of their building. Thalia reached for the door to get out, only to find it locked.

She turned to look at Darion. “Open the door.”

Darion held her gaze with a quiet, unreadable stare. “Is this really the only time you’ll talk to me first? When you need something?”

Thalia’s heart lurched. She lowered her eyes. “Darion, I’m exhausted. What’s the point of us going back and forth like this?”

“Eight years and you’re already tired? What about the rest of our lives?” Darion’s voice dropped low. “Didn’t we promise each other forever?”

The forever I promised,” Thalia said quietly, “was between you and me. Nobody else.”

“There was never anyone else between us.”

Thalia closed her eyes, the exhaustion weighing on every word she spoke. “Let’s just get divorced. Talking to you wears me

out.”

“That’s never gonna happen.”

Thalia said nothing.

She sat in silence, her eyes dull and unfocused, staring blankly at the windshield. Silence settled over the car.

Darion watched her the whole time, his gaze heavy and burning, fixed on her expressionless face.

He got annoyed.

He unbuckled his seatbelt, leaned across the console, and grabbed her chin to kiss her.

The slap cracked through the car like a gunshot.

Thalia had backhanded him across the face.

Her eyes were clear and freezing cold. “Don’t touch me.”

Darion ran his tongue along the inside of his cheek, and something dangerous lit up behind his eyes, as she had just thrown down a dare. He tightened his grip, pulled her in, and kissed her hard.

Thalia sucked in a sharp breath, but his mouth was already on hers, swallowing whatever protest she had left.

The kiss tore through both of them, fierce and breathless, until neither could tell whose air they were breathing.

He pulled back just enough to graze her lips, his voice rough and low. “Thalia. Think about this. Do we really have to go through with a divorce?”

He unlocked the doors without waiting for an answer.

Thalia didn’t hesitate. She got out of the car right away and walked quickly toward the elevator.

Darion watched her walk away. His expression darkened, and he stared for a long moment before finally looking away.

He pulled out his phone and called Matthew.

“Come drink with me,” Darion said.
