Shyla’s eyes flickered, and she said, “What? What are you talking about?”

Thalia stepped forward and locked eyes with Shyla. “Mom, you know Grandma desperately wants those sapphire carrings back. Why did you tell Dad there’s no such thing? Don’t you care about Grandma at all?”

Her sharp stare made Shyla uncomfortable. Shyla frowned and set the scissors down on the table with a crisp clink.

“Stay out of this,” Shyla said, her tone turning cold.

“Why?” Thalia didn’t understand. “Those earrings are Grandma and Grandpa’s love token. She’s been thinking about them for years. You’re her daughter, so why won’t you help her?”

“I said stay out of it!” Shyla’s emotions flared. “Love token? That’s a joke!”

Thalia looked confused. “Mom, what are you talking about?”

Shyla whipped around to face the window and took several deep breaths before her emotions settled. “Thalia, those sapphire earrings don’t belong to your grandmother, and she shouldn’t have them. You should give them back to Miya.”

Thalia felt like she was dreaming. She thought, ‘Shyla is Grandma’s daughter, but she’s saying this? Shouldn’t have them? Don’t belong to Grandma?’

The words didn’t register at first, and Thalia’s voice softened. “Mom, can you please explain what you mean?”

“Stop asking questions,” Shyla said with a frown. “Just listen to me. Did you bring them home today?”

“I’m not giving them to Miya,” Thalia said, shaking her head. “They belong to Grandma.”

They don’t belong to your grandmother,” Shyla shot back. “Your grandmother stole them!”

Her eyes filled with embarrassment and frustration, then disgust, as if she was recalling something shameful from the past.

Thalia couldn’t believe what she was hearing. “Mom, did you hit your head or something?” she asked. “How can you say something like that?”

Shyla’s expression turned serious. “You need to stop spending so much time with her,” she said. “She’s been a bad influence on you.”

Thalia took two steps back and shook her head. “This is insane,” she said. “I don’t believe you. Grandma has always been good to me and she hasn’t done anything wrong. Don’t badmouth her like this.”

Thalia!” Shyla reached for her hand, but Thalia turned and headed for the door.

Shyla watched her go, and her expression grew conflicted. She bit her lip and finally spoke up. “Those earrings were a gift your grandfather gave to his first love,” she said. “Your grandma saw them and claimed they were hers. If that’s not stealing. then what is?”

Thalia froze in her tracks. She turned around slowly, disbelief written all over her face. “What are you talking about?” she asked.

Shyla let out a heavy sigh. “I didn’t want to tell you,” she said, “but she’s been turning you against us and now she’s using those earrings to drive a wedge between us. I don’t need to cover for her anymore.”

She grabbed Thalia’s hand and pulled her upstairs. Once they were in the bedroom with the door closed, Shyla looked at her
