Chapter 15 I Don’t Understand
After the call ended, Thalia let out a bitter, mocking laugh.
Two men warned freezing her cards. They restricted her spending, trapped her with no room to breathe, and pressured her to bow her head and apologize.
She wondered, ‘What did I do wrong? People are already trampling all over her, and am I supposed to smile and say, “Nice job”?”
Thalia clutched her phone in a death grip. The pain in her knees was unbearable, so she sank down onto a nearby bench, exhausted.
She looked up at the dull, overcast sky, its heaviness mirroring her own despair..
Tears stung her eyes, but she clamped down hard, too stubborn to let even one drop fall.
She told herself, ‘It isn’t worth it. She stole away my parents. And Darion doesn’t love me anymore. So none of them are worth a single tear.
She sat there for ages, until a car glided to a stop right in front of her. The door swung open, and a familiar figure stepped out.
Thalia looked up, her gaze hardening into ice the moment she saw Darion.
Her hands tightened as she asked, “Are you here to finalize the divorce?”
Darion’s eyes swept over her pale face and bloodless lips, lingering on her legs, which were trembling faintly.
Without a word, he walked over, lifted her into his arms, and headed for the car.
“Let me go!” Thalia shouted, panic lacing her voice as he grabbed her. She froze for a split second, then thrashed against him, fighting back.
But Darion ignored her struggles, forcing her into the car before sliding in himself. “Back to Rosewood Manor,” he ordered the driver.
Thalia retorted sharply: “To the courthouse instead!”
The driver started the car, feigning deafness, and drove off in another direction.
Realizing what was happening, Thalia threw herself at the door handle, desperate to open it.
The door creaked open for an instant, but Darion swiftly pulled her back into his arms and shut it tight.
“Lock the doors!” Darion snapped.
The driver jolted, scrambling to lock all the doors at once.
The partition slid up with a soft click, cutting off their view of the front and clamping down an even colder silence inside the car.
“Let me go! If you’re not taking me to the courthouse, then let me out! I can’t stand being stuck in this car with you!” Thalia shouted, thrashing wildly to break free.
But she hadn’t eaten a thing, her strength drained. After a moment of struggling, she was already gasping for breath.
Her emotions boiled over, the rims of her eyes turning a painful red.
‘Don’t cry!’ Thalia told herself fiercely, biting back the urge to break down.
But Darion held her tighter, carefully restraining her. “Thalia, stop, please,”
Thalia bowed her head and bit his hand hard.
Soon, the taste of blood filled her mouth, and tears finally slipped down her cheeks.
She swiped them away frantically, clinging to her last shred of pride.
Darion winced in pain, but his grip never loosened. His voice came out hoarse, “I’m only good to Keith because he’s Emely’s only child.
