The hazy glow from the table lamp softly illuminated the room, but it couldn’t reveal the deep, unreadable emotions in Darion’s eyes.
Darion watched as Thalia’s eyes grew red, the pain in her gaze unmistakable. It twisted his heart.
His Adam’s apple bobbed as he spoke, his voice low and heavy. “Thalia, I saw her being wheeled into the delivery room. writhing in agony. I heard her screams, so raw and desperate. She nearly died just to bring a child into this world. I kept thinking, if that had been you, I would’ve lost my mind.”
He lowered his gaze, his voice dropping even further. “Thalia, just the two of us is enough for me. The Blackburn family already has Keith. They don’t need me to carry on the bloodline. I don’t want you to go through that kind of pain.”
“Did you ever ask for my opinion?” Thalia’s voice was cool and distant.
She spoke lightly, almost as if the question meant nothing at all.
“I’m sorry,” Darion said, his voice husky with regret.
“I messed up. I should’ve talked to you before I went and got the vasectomy.”
Thalia scoffed, a mocking laugh escaping her lips.
“You really think I want the same things as you?” she shot back.
Darion frowned, his brows drawing together. “Isn’t that true? Thalia, you’re the one who loves me most.”
Kids didn’t matter at all to him.
Their relationship didn’t need a kid to keep them together.
They’d loved each other deeply for eight years.
“You’re really scary,” Thalia said, her body tense. Her clear eyes suddenly looked distant, like she was seeing him for the first time. “You don’t want kids, but I do. Yeah, I said I wanted it to be just us, but there’s a big difference between not wanting kids and not being able to have them.”
Darion pressed, “Isn’t it because you saw Keith that you want a kid?”
Thalia took a deep breath. “Darion, there’s no point in talking about this anymore. Stand up, I’m heading home.”
She’d already accomplished what she came for tonight.
It hadn’t been easy, but she’d managed to make a new friend, Sebastian.
And Miya hadn’t managed to take advantage of her, which made Thalia genuinely happy.
She had no interest in wasting any more time arguing with Darion.
Darion saw the distant chill in her expression, and the suffocating ache in his chest only intensified.
I’ll take you home, Darion said quietly.

Without hesitation, he took her hand in his.
Thalia turned her hand away, refusing any contact. “No need. I’ve already called a ride.”
She was even colder and more distant, her gaze never once landing on him.

Darion smiled softly, his voice deep and magnetic. “Thalia, let me take you home. It’s not a big deal. Otherwise, I honestly don’t know what I’ll do.”
“You…” Thalia looked at him, stunned.
“Are you threatening me?” Her voice was icy, disbelief written all over her face.
