Chapter 18 Jason’s Birthday Party
The crisp clink of high heels against the floor sliced through the laughter, and the room’s boisterous vibe faded abruptly.
They’d been playing blind man’s bluff. Jason was blindfolded, the birthday boy calling all the shots.
The rule was simple: whoever he caught had to grant him one wish. Tonight, he was the one in charge, after all.
“Come on, why did you all go quiet? You troublemakers have been messing with me all night. Just you wait, when I catch you, you’ll pay!” Jason teased, blindfolded and grinning.
Unaware of the silence, he grinned and swung the stick harder, until it collided with someone.
“Got you!” Jason shouted, excitement in his voice.
He reached out quickly, latching onto the person’s arm.
He yanked off the blindfold, grinning. “Let me see… what should I make you do? I…”
But the words died on his lips, his smile dropping completely as he stared at the person in front of him.
“Uh… Thalia…” Jason stammered, flustered, and caught off guard.
It turned out he’d grabbed Thalia’s arm.
He let go of her arm like he’d gotten an electric shock. “Thalia, when did you get here? Seriously, guys, why didn’t anyone say anything? I could’ve gone to pick you up.”
Thalia gave him a cold look. “I used to get you birthday gifts every year, and you’d always invite me in advance. Why is this year different?”
Jason’s eyes darted around nervously, his words stumbling out. “I… I was going to call you, but Darion said you were hurt and resting at home, so he told me not to bother you…”
“Alright, I see,” Thalia replied, her tone cool.
She nodded slowly, her gaze sweeping across the room. “Where’s Darion?”
Jason glanced around awkwardly, scratching the back of his neck. “He was right here a minute ago. Hey, has anyone seen Darion?”
One of the girls piped up, pointing toward the door. “I think he went out to the garden.”
Thalia said nothing more, striding straight toward the door.
The girl turned to her friend, leaning in to murmur. “I saw Miya leave with Keith too. What’s up with them?”
“Darion treats Keith like he’s his own child. Probably went out to coo Keith.”
“But it feels weird, doesn’t it? Do you think Keith could actually be Darion’s child?”
“Shh!” Their whispers were cut off, and they instinctively glanced toward the glass door.
Thalia had stopped there, her figure rigid for a moment, as if she’d heard every word, then she turned and walked out into the garden.
The moment she stepped outside, a huge pool stretched out before her, its surface glinting under the lights, clear all the way to the bottom.
Not far away was a small, beautifully landscaped garden, with a rock feature and a cozy pavilion. Inside sat three figures: two adults and a child,
From where she stood, Thalia could see Darion looking at Miya, listening to her with full attention.
Thalia advanced toward them slowly, each step deliberate.
The sound of her heels alerted them, and both looked up.
Miya jumped to her feet immediately, pulling away from Darion. She smiled faintly at Thalia. “Lia, are you feeling better?”
