Dax’s face grew even more serious. “I sent some people to Hope Village and tracked down a few folks who lived through the earthquake.

“At first, they wouldn’t say a word, even pretended they didn’t remember you. But I could tell they were lying. After a little pressure, I finally got one guy to spill the truth.”

‘He said when the earthquake hit, all you students were at Hope Elementary School. He was the night watchman there Everyone was rushing out, but you ran back inside. He shouted your name several times, but you didn’t even look back.

“You ran inside, and soon after, you came out with a boy on your back. But you barely made it a few steps before you passed out. Luckily, the quake stopped just then, and someone ran in to drag you both out. That’s the only reason you weren’t buried alive.”

Thalia’s heart raced. She gripped the documents tightly and asked, “Did he say whether the boy I rescued was Darion?”

Dax frowned. “He also mentioned something else. Apparently, someone told him to keep quiet about it, and that person was Darion.”

Thalia crumpled the documents in her hand.

It was Darion who told them to keep this a secret?

Why would he do that?

Is he really helping Miya lie to me?

Miya claimed she saved him, and he actually believed her? He even went so far as to have people give false testimony, all to cover for her?’ Thalia’s mind was in turmoil.

Her eyes burned with anger.

I was the one who saved him all those years ago!

And yet he chose to believe Miya?’ Thalia felt utterly betrayed.

Thinking about everything Darion had done lately, Thalia found it all absurd.

I honestly have no idea what he’s thinking anymore, Thalia thought, more baffled than ever.

But now that she knew Darion’s heart leaned toward Miya, Thalia figured she’d just go along with it.

They were bound to end up together eventually, weren’t they?’ Thalia thought, a little bitterly.

I’m just speeding things up, that’s all, she told herself.

“Ms. Coleman, are you okay?” Dax asked.

He couldn’t help but watch her anxiously, concern written all over his face.

“I’m fine.” Thalia replied, her voice tight.

She took several deep breaths to steady herself, then said.

“Keep digging. I want to know everything that happened during that earthquake, proof that I was the one who saved him.

“Keep digging. I want to know everything that happened during that earthquake, proof that I was the one who saved him, why Miya was even there, and how they teamed up to fabricate false testimony. I want to know it all.”

Dax nodded. “Alright.”

His guys still hadn’t come back yet. They were questioning more than just that one man.

Sooner or later, someone would crack and spill the truth.

That’s why he rushed to tell Thalia as soon as he got even a scrap of news.

He figured it shouldn’t be an issue.

Thalia ripped the documents to shreds and said, “Thanks for going through all this trouble.”

Dax grinned. “No need to thank me, Ms. Coleman. I’m your bodyguard now. It’s all in a day’s work.”
