Dax’s face grew even more serious. “I sent some people to Hope Village and tracked down a few folks who lived through the earthquake.

“At first, they wouldn’t say a word, even pretended they didn’t remember you. But I could tell they were lying. After a little pressure, I finally got one guy to spill the truth.”

‘He said when the earthquake hit, all you students were at Hope Elementary School. He was the night watchman there Everyone was rushing out, but you ran back inside. He shouted your name several times, but you didn’t even look back.

Dax nodded. “Alright.”

His guys still hadn’t come back yet. They were questioning more than just that one man.

Sooner or later, someone would crack and spill the truth.

That’s why he rushed to tell Thalia as soon as he got even a scrap of news.

He figured it shouldn’t be an issue.

Thalia ripped the documents to shreds and said, “Thanks for going through all this trouble.”

Dax grinned. “No need to thank me, Ms. Coleman. I’m your bodyguard now. It’s all in a day’s work.”

got out of the car, her steps slow and heavy as she made her way toward the hospital.

The cold wind whipped against her, sharpening her mind and making her heart grow colder and more resolute.

‘I’m done hesitating over Helen’s proposal,’ Thalia thought to herself.

A week later, Helen called Thalia.

“Thalia, we’re heading to the cemetery. Do you want to come with us?” Helen asked.

“Sure,” Thalia replied.

Emely had always been kind to her, Miya was way out of line, and Keith was just irritating. But Emely was genuinely a good person, and Thalia wasn’t about to let her feelings toward the others cloud her respect for someone who was no longer here.

She bought some lilies and chrysanthemums and made her way to the cemetery.

When she arrived, she saw Helen, Miya, and Darion were already there.

Emely’s grave was covered in fresh flowers.
