Thalia had already left Blackburn Manor. She drove slowly through the pitch-black night, the streetlights casting a faint yellow glow. Inside the car, the lights flickered on and off, highlighting her blank expression.
Her hands clutched the steering wheel, her gaze locked straight ahead.
The “surprise” was Miya Coleman, of course.
After leaving the bedroom, Thalia headed straight for Helen.
She’d done everything she could. Now it was Helen’s turn to handle the rest.
Thalia figured Helen had already spoken to Miya.
Miya wouldn’t turn it down, that’s for sure.
She’d been keeping Darion hooked all this time. Wasn’t it all for this moment?
Thalia pressed her lips together, feeling a hollow emptiness inside.
‘How much time has passed?’ she thought to herself.
‘Half an hour…
The drug was Helen’s doing. It had to be strong. Half an hour should be more than enough for it to kick in.
Thalia picked up the water beside her and took a sip, trying to calm herself down a little more.
The headlights in her rearview mirror suddenly flickered. A car sped past her and screeched to a halt right in front of her.
Thalia hit the brakes hard, her heart lurching in her chest.
‘Did it fail?’ Thalia wondered, her mind racing.
Then, two more cars sped up behind her and pulled alongside, boxing her in and cutting off any way out.
Thalia suddenly noticed the road was completely deserted. There wasn’t another car in sight.
Sitting in her car, Thalia felt a cold shiver start at her feet and slowly spread through her whole body.
The third car pulled up behind her, and the sound of a door slamming shut echoed through the night.
Thalia’s lashes fluttered as she glanced up at the rearview mirror. When she saw blood winding down the man’s left arm, her eyes widened in shock.
With the headlights blazing behind him, his face was shrouded in shadow, making him look like a demon lurking in the night, his features flickering in and out, his eyes gleaming with a cold, wicked light.

Thalia felt her blood run cold.
‘So it really… failed, Thalia thought, stunned.
‘But why did it turn out like this?’ Thalia thought, her mind reeling.

‘Miya wouldn’t make a sound. She even used her usual perfume, and with the drug in effect, Darion shouldn’t have realized a thing… Thalia thought, her heart pounding.
“Thalia, get out,” Darion said, his tone flat and commanding.
Just as Thalia was lost in her thoughts, she realized Darion was already standing by her window. His voice came through the glass, low and dull, carrying a weight that made her heart sink.
A chill of fear crept over Thalia.
She turned to face him, and saw his white shirt soaked in blood. There was even a smear across his cheek.
The blood on his left arm was especially thick, pooling and spreading in the darkness, making it look even more terrifying under the night’s shadows.
His handsome face stayed composed, but those phoenix eyes glinted with a strange, chilling light.
