Thalia turned to Darion, her watery eyes filled with a hint of complaint. “Are you… did you do this on purpose?”
Before she could get the words out, Darion had already turned and walked away.
Thalia was frozen in place, completely stunned. He radiated cold indifference, his pale face frosted over, and he never once looked at her.
‘He shows up this late and doesn’t even say a word?’ Thalia thought, feeling her anger rise.
She was so furious she almost burst out laughing.
She let out a long breath, walked out of City Hall, and called after his retreating figure, “Tomorrow at nine. If you’re late again, I’ll know you’re just stalling!”
Darion didn’t even pause. He just got into his car.
‘Hmph!’ Thalia scoffed to herself.
Still scoffing, she turned and got into her own car. The two of them drove off in opposite directions.
When Thalia got back to the hospital, her face looked visibly pale and upset.
Mrs. Blackburn noticed right away and asked, “Thalia, what’s wrong?”
Thalia slumped, looking totally defeated. “It didn’t work out.”
Mrs. Blackburn looked confused. “Why not?”
Thalia told her everything that had happened that afternoon.
Mrs. Blackburn nodded slowly and said, “Judging by his attitude, he seems determined to divorce you. He probably just got delayed today. Tomorrow, you’ll probably get it done.”
“I hope so,” Thalia replied.
That night, Wendy Adkins bombarded her with messages, asking if she was free at eight the next morning.
Thalia thought for a moment. City Hall opened at nine, and she and Darion had agreed to meet at nine, so she should have plenty of time to accompany Wendy Adkins to her blind date at eight. She agreed.
Wendy Adkins cheered happily, sending her a flood of kissy and huggy emojis.
She barely slept that night, tossing and turning as scenes of Darion ditching her again kept replaying in her mind.
But he was already so cold. Would he really bail on her again?

Blackburn Manor.
Darion listened to his men’s report. After leaving the airport, Miya Coleman had changed her appearance, got into a car with fake plates, and then vanished without a trace.
He went to the airport and reviewed the security footage repeatedly, finally spotting Miya Coleman, but she still managed to get away in the end.
Someone was there to pick her up.
Who took her away?
‘Where did they hide her?’ Darion wondered.
“Darry…”
Keith’s childish, choked voice came from behind him. “Where’s my mom?”
Darion held Keith in his arms, his voice icy and emotionless. “Your mom’s gone to work. She won’t be coming back anytime soon.”
“Wah…” Keith broke down instantly, sobbing, “I want my mom… I want my mom…”
Darion glanced down at him, his dark eyes tinged with chill. Kids could pick up on emotions so easily. Keith flinched, scared, but kept whimpering under his breath.
“I want my mom,” he murmured again.
Darion said softly, “Darry will stay with you from now on.”
Keith pouted, his big eyes filled with tears, and no matter how hard Darion tried, he just couldn’t comfort
him.
All he wanted was his mom.
Darion, cold and unyielding as ever, held Keith in his arms, offering comfort with a patience that felt almost mechanical. Only when the boy finally cried himself to sleep did things quiet down.
He shut down his computer and carried Keith upstairs.
