Chapter 39 Darion Targets Wendy
The sharp, acrid smell of disinfectant hung heavy in the hospital room. Matthew walked in to find Darion leaning over the bed, his back rigid. He crossed the room and patted him firmly on the shoulder.
Matthew asked, “Darion, what’s going on?”
Darion turned, shock flashing across his face. “You’re back?”
“Yeah,” Matthew said, dragging a chair over and plopping down beside him. “And the first person I met is Thalia. She wandered the streets like she had no clue where she was. My driver almost ran her over.”
Darion jumped up from his seat, his eyes locked on Matthew, panic edging his voice. “Did he hit her? Is she okay?”
“Calm down. He didn’t,” Matthew replied, a smirk tugging at his lips as he watched Darion’s tense reaction. See? I told her there’s no way you could ever fall for your sister-in-law. She must’ve misunderstood.” Darion’s pale, handsome features went stiff, his throat bobbing as he stared at Matthew, voice low and tight, What did she tell you?”
Matthew shrugged, then laid out everything Thalia had shared in the car.
Darion closed his eyes, a faint trace of exhaustion etched between his brows.
Matthew said, “She really looks like she’s dead set on divorcing you. You should go fix this.”
Darion’s voice was low and serious. “No lawyer in Oakwood would dare take her case.”
“Seriously, what’s with you two? She’s stubborn, and you’re the same. How’s that gonna work? Girls need to be pampered, man. If you keep butting heads with her, she’s gonna make your life hell,” Matthew chided, trying to talk some sense into him.
Darion pressed his fingers against his temples, looking utterly drained. “I’m stuck in a hospital bed. Spare me the advice.”
Matthew stood up. “Alright. Rest up.”
The moment he stepped outside the hospital, his smile faded a little.
He took out his phone and made a call. “Find out what’s going on between Thalia and Darion.”
He could sense that something was deeply wrong between them.
Thinking of Thalia’s pale face, Matthew brushed his thumb lightly over his screen before walking away.
Thalia curled up on the couch, hugging her knees tightly, her eyes empty and lifeless.
With every lawyer refusing her case, she couldn’t even file for a divorce.
‘What am I going to do?’ Thalia thought, feeling utterly helpless.
She grabbed her phone and tried calling Wendy, but the call didn’t connect. She brushed it off and collapsed back onto the couch.
Half-asleep and dazed, Thalia jolted awake as her phone suddenly rang.
She blinked into the dimness. Only a few stray lights from the street outside filtered through the window, streaking soft light across the room.
Thalia glanced at her phone, saw Wendy’s name, and swiped to answer. “Hey, Wendy?”
“Thalia, it’s me, Wendy’s mom,” came a tear-choked voice.
Thalia froze. “Mrs. Adkins, what’s happened? Is Wendy okay?”
Wendy’s mom sobbed, “Thalia, please, can you beg Mr. Blackburn to show us mercy? We’re just an ordinary family. He could destroy us with one flick of his wrist. We can’t take this anymore…”
Thalia’s mind went completely blank. She pinched her thigh hard, the sharp pain jolting her back to her senses.
