Darion listened as Thalia described the last time she took a paternity test. He raised an eyebrow with a hint of disdain and snorted, “System glitch? Data wiped? You actually believed that?”

Thalia was speechless.

She glanced down at the paternity test in her hand again, her face still full of confusion. “But why would he do that? Why lie to me? Why keep me from knowing I’m not their daughter?”

Darion spoke up again, “After the paternity test, you were kidnapped, weren’t you? The kidnapper didn’t hurt you or anything, right?”

Thalia nodded slowly.

She’d been drugged, and when she finally came to, the first thing she saw was Darion. She had no clue what had happened during that time.

Darion’s eyes grew colder. “That’s when all the danger started closing in on you. You took the paternity test, and your real identity got exposed. The guy disguised as a janitor came specifically to verify who you were. Once he confirmed it, he made his move to eliminate you.”

He fixed his gaze on her, his eyes growing more intense and suspicious. “Thalia, who are you really? Why are they so wary of you? Why are they terrified of you going back?”

Thalia clenched her fists. “I want to know too.”

Darion smirked, a glint of interest flashing in his eyes. “I’m getting more and more curious about this. I’ll get to the bottom of it.

“For now, you need to stay away from Sebastian, and keep your guard up around Matthew. We don’t know what role he’s playing yet, but one thing’s for sure, those assassination attempts on you are definitely tied to him.”

“I…” Thalia wanted to say something else.

But Darion cut her off. “At the very least, you can’t make excuses for him. Why would he even bother faking a paternity test just to trick you?”

Thalia was speechless.

She fell silent.

He was right.

She used to believe Matthew would never hurt her, but now, she wasn’t so sure anymore.

He made up a lie, got close to her pretending to help, just so he could find out who she really was, and make it easier for those dangerous people to get to her.

Thalia took a deep breath, calmed herself, and said, “Got it.”

She felt a strange sense of curiosity. Maybe after everything she’d been through, it was no wonder she

She lowered her eyes, staring at the paternity test again. The weight that had always pressed on her heart seemed to disappear in an instant.

So she wasn’t their biological daughter after all.

Suddenly, all the ways they’d treated her unfairly made sense. But did they know the truth too?

Trenton had even called her, saying Shyla’s health was failing and asking her to come see her.

‘What was going through their minds?’ Thalia wondered to herself.

“I need to put some medicine on my wound,” Darion said.

His low, velvety voice pulled Thalia back to reality.

Thalia looked up at him. “You could just do it yourself.”

“I can’t reach the wound on my back,” Darion replied, his tone calm. “It’s just some medicine, nothing big. You’re not seriously going to turn me down for something this small, are you? We’re working together

now.”
