Wendy turned and walked away, putting the knife back where it belonged. But when she came out, she saw Jason still there, staring at her with an unreadable expression that sent a chill down her spine.
She looked at him warily. “What are you doing?”
Jason’s hands were clenched into tight fists at his sides. After a long pause, he finally said, “Quinn is a lunatic. He’s the leader of a mercenary group overseas. He’ll do anything for money, even murder or
arson.
“You’ve gotten mixed up with someone like him, and he’s still hunting for you. Wendy, do you realize how much danger you’re in right now?”
Wendy frowned at him. “Thalia already told me all this. I’ve been really cautious. There’s no way I’ll let him find me.”
‘So it’s true… she really did sleep with Quinn.’ Jason thought, lowering his gaze.
They’d hooked up, and now Quinn was determined to make Wendy answer for it.
Jason took a few deep breaths to calm himself, then looked up at her. “Just hiding won’t fix anything. Right now, he’s got no way to do much in Oakwood, but once he’s back overseas, he’ll have a million ways to find you.”
Wendy’s face instantly drained of color. “Come on, don’t freak me out. There’s no way he’s that unstoppable…”
Jason dropped onto the couch. “I’m not trying to freak you out. I’m just telling you how it is.”
Wendy was totally dumbfounded. ‘If that’s really the case, then Thalia’s idea won’t work either. Even if I try to hide by traveling, if Quinn wants to find me, he will,’ she thought
“So what am I supposed to do now?” Wendy muttered, her voice barely above a whisper.
Wendy’s expression was one of utter helplessness.
Jason locked eyes with her. “I’ve got a plan. I doubt he’d mess with a married woman.”
Wendy blinked at him. “You’re saying I should just get married right away? But how am I supposed to find someone willing to marry me on such short notice?”
Jason paused, then said, “I can help you out. Your parents already think we’re a couple, so we might as well play along and let them believe it.”
Wendy’s eyes widened in shock. She stepped up and pressed her hand to his forehead. “You’re not running a fever… so why are you saying such crazy things?”
Jason grabbed her wrist, gritting his teeth. “I’m just trying to help you out. Who said I actually want to marry you for real? We can just make a deal, get married for a year or two, then split up. By then, Quinn probably won’t even remember who you are.”
Wendy tilted her head, studying him closely. “Are you serious? What’s in it for you?”

Jason lifted his chin with a smirk. “Hey, can’t I just play the hero and save an innocent girl? What’s so unbelievable about that?”
Wendy jerked her hand away. “Honestly, not wanting anything in return is even creepier. Who knows if you’re scheming something bigger? Just go. Thanks for the idea, I’ll think about it.”
She grabbed Jason and shoved him toward the door.
Jason froze. “Wait, how are you going to decide? Who else would you even fake-marry? I’m offering to help, so why don’t you trust me? What could I possibly want from you?
“What do you have that I’d even want? Why do you always assume the worst about me? I’m honestly just trying to help you!”
“Yeah, yeah, thanks, Mr. Nice Guy. It’s late, go home. Bye,” Wendy said, pushing him out the door.
