Chapter 611

The jungle was shrouded in mist at night. At first, there was a narrow path, but the further Thalia went, the thicker the branches got, until the path almost disappeared.
Thalia moved slowly, afraid that a stray branch might take her out at any moment.
She wasn’t familiar with this place at all, so she was just feeling her way forward.
The sounds of insects and birds filled her ears, and she couldn’t shake the thought that venomous snakes or other creepy crawlies might be hiding nearby.
This jungle was seriously dangerous.
But she couldn’t afford to stop.
She had no clue if someone was after her, but she had to find a spot that seemed safe enough to hide in.
She had to give it her all.
The feeling of being watched clung to Thalia like a shadow, even in the pitch-black jungle. She could feel it, unmistakably.
Her breathing was heavy and ragged, coming in waves, and her face was drenched in sweat.
Finally, she stopped in a relatively open spot and sat down on a big rock.
Her backpack had some water and energy bars.
She figured if she could take out whoever was tailing her, then she’d make her move.
With what she had, she should be able to last a few days.
As long as she didn’t get killed first.
She took a sip of water and tilted her head back, hoping to catch a glimpse of the night sky, but all she got was a ceiling of tangled branches overhead.
Just a few slivers of sky peeked through the narrow gaps, and in those cracks, a handful of stars winked back at her.
Thalia was scared out of her mind right now.
But she couldn’t let so many people risk their lives just for her.
She was really afraid of dying. Thalia thought.
‘But seeing others get hurt or die because of me would be even harder to bear, she admitted to herself.
Darion Blackburn’s pale, frail face flashed through Thalia’s mind, and she remembered all those moments when he’d been in danger.
She tried to steady her tangled emotions, packed the water away, and waited until she felt a bit stronger before venturing further into the jungle.

Suddenly, the sound of a dry branch snapping broke the silence.
Thalia’s whole body jerked, her nerves stretched taut.
She turned toward the noise, holding her breath, listening intently. Footsteps were approaching.
They’re catching up!’ Thalia thought, her heart pounding.

In the darkness, Thalia’s face was pale as a sheet, but she was strangely calm. She scanned the area, found a big tree trunk. and ducked behind it. She drew her pistol and aimed it where the footsteps were coming from.
If she saw anyone, she’d shoot right away.
The wind seemed to stop, and all Thalia could hear was the pounding of her own heart. Sweat rolled down her forehead, almost blurring her vision.
Just then, a blurry figure appeared in her line of sight.
She was about to pull the trigger…
Dax shouted, “Ms. Coleman!” as he hurried over, clutching his injured arm.
At that moment, Dax Stone’s voice broke the silence of the jungle. He kept his voice low, so only she could hear him.
Thalia’s eyes widened in shock, but she didn’t dare lower her gun. Still, she kept her finger off the trigger.
Dax moved closer, his silhouette sharpening in the gloom, and Thalia could just barely make out his face.
Thalia let out a shaky breath. It was definitely Dax, not someone pretending to be him.
Thalia lowered her gun and stepped out from behind the tree. “How did you manage to catch up to me?” she asked, still a bit surprised.
Seeing that she was unharmed, Dax let out a relieved sigh and said quietly, “I just couldn’t let you go out here alone. I was worried about you.”
But Thalia shook her head. “Go, now! If you stay with me, you’ll get yourself killed!”
Dax just grinned. “Ms. Coleman, my job’s always been life-or-death, so I’m not scared. I had my reasons for working with Darion before, but I know I betrayed you, and I want to make it right.
‘Plus, you’re Diana’s granddaughter. I can’t just stand by and let something happen to you. If anything happens to you, how could I ever face Diana?”
