When Thalia woke up again, it was already bright outside. Some bugs were crawling on her face, so she swiped at them absentmindedly before looking around.

Dax was sitting not far away, looking completely alert, his eyes sharp as he scanned the area.

‘Hey Dax. Thalia whispered.

Thalia called out quietly, not wanting to disturb him.

Dax turned his head and glanced at her. “You’re up? Why not get some more rest?”

Thalia asked, a bit puzzled, “How long was I out?”

‘Barely half an hour,” Dax said. “Look, the sun hasn’t even come up yet.”

He gestured toward the sky, which was just starting to lighten.

Thalia rubbed her aching neck and said, “I couldn’t really get any decent sleep, but half an hour is enough. Do you want to take a break?”

‘No, let’s rest together when this is all done,” Dax replied, shaking his head. “I scoped things out. If we head that way, we can cross the river. But we shouldn’t keep going deeper. We’re still on the outskirts, so it’s pretty safe for now. The further in we go, the more unpredictable dangers we’ll run into. You really need to think about it.”

Thalia pulled out another bottle of water and handed it to him. She took a big gulp herself, wiped her mouth, and said, “Let’s ambush them right here. They’ve been chasing us nonstop. Now it’s our turn to flip the script.”

Dax grinned. “Not bad, you’ve got guts. But you better brace yourself, this is gonna get risky.”

Thalia smiled. “I’ve been ready ages ago.”

Dax nodded. “I figured you’d say that. While you were catching some shut-eye, I threw together a couple of quick camouflage covers. Just toss this over yourself, hide out in the thick bushes, keep your breathing steady, and don’t fixate on anyone for too long. They won’t notice you.”

He walked over, grabbed a cover made from branches and weeds, and handed it to her.

Thalia took it, genuinely surprised. “Dang, you’re really good at this.”

Dax said, “I used to do this kind of stuff a lot. After spending so much time outdoors, you just pick up these skills naturally This is the easiest one. When we get out of here safe, I’ll teach you.”

“Sounds good!” Thalia replied.

Thalia nodded, her answer clear.

Right after, she started looking around for a spot where the bushes were low and thick enough to really hide her

In the end, she lay flat on her stomach about thirty meters from the river, with a clear view of the path they’d taken to get here, so she wouldn’t miss any sign of trouble if something moved.

Dax piled a bunch of leaves on her head, then smeared her face with leaves and dirt. Her pale face was quickly streaked with grassy green and mud. As long as she kept still, she’d be nearly invisible.
