Just then, the elevator doors slid open, and the person outside, catching sight of their situation, hesitated for a moment before stepping inside.
Thalia averted her gaze, pretending not to notice anything.
The elevator car was mirrored, allowing those in front to see what was happening behind them.
Curiosity flickered in the newcomer’s eyes. It was rather amusing to see Darion and Thalia standing at opposite ends of the elevator, yet still holding hands, their arms stretched across the empty space between them.
The person even pulled out their phone, as if to take a picture.
But then, Darion’s cold, piercing gaze suddenly fell upon her. A shiver ran through her, and she quickly pretended to be engrossed in her phone, her fingers swiping aimlessly across the screen, not daring to steal another glance at them.
Having reached the ground floor, the woman strode briskly out of the building. Though a fair distance now separated them, Thalia could still hear her sending voice messages. “Hey guys, you won’t believe what I just saw…”
She gave her arm another shake, but Darion’s grip remained firm. He said nothing, nor did he release her.
His silent persistence had, by now, worn away every last trace of her temper.
The car pulled up in front of a pharmacy. Darion got out and went inside, returning moments later with a pack of ice.
Without a word, he took her hand and pressed the ice pack firmly into her palm.
The cold was sharp, almost biting, and her fingers instinctively tensed.
She lifted her gaze to him. “What are you doing?”
His eyes dropped to her reddened palm, his expression unreadable. “It’ll ease the pain in a bit.”
Thalia studied him for a moment, a trace of something complicated flickering in her clear eyes. “You know what, Darion? You’re honestly kind of confusing.”
One moment, he was practically accusing her of hurting Miya. The next, he was holding her hand and soothing her pain with ice.
She honestly couldn’t make sense of what went on inside his head.
“You’re right,” Darion said, lifting his gaze to her. “If you’d actually wanted to hurt her, you wouldn’t have gone easy. You’d have made her cry.”
Thalia pressed her lips together.
Darion pressed on. “So that means she actually fell on her own this time.”
His words barely registered, stirring nothing much in her chest.
Their relationship had worn thin, riddled with holes too numerous to count.
And the parts he’d just tried to patch up were far too insignificant to mend anything that truly mattered.
The gaping ones remained, letting the wind whistle through, and every now and then, something sharp would tumble out

and cut her all over again.
Let go of me,” she said.
Danion held her gaze for a moment, then slowly released his grip.
Thalia tossed the ice pack aside. Her voice was flat, devoid of emotion. “I don’t need this.”
She reached for the door, but it wouldn’t open. The locks were still engaged.
Without turning around, she said, “Open the door.”
