Oriana nearly swooned at the sight of Micah–his face still soft with sleep, impossibly handsome in the late–morning light. Flustered, she batted his hand away and stumbled into the bathroom to wash up.
As she passed the trash bin, her eyes caught on something bright inside–undeniable evidence of their activities from the night before. Heat flooded her cheeks. She quickly grabbed a handful of tissues and spread them over the top, covering the scene as if that could erase it.
Behind her, Micah watched her flustered little ritual, his gaze filled with quiet amusement and tender indulgence.
By the time Oriana emerged, lunch was already prepared. She ate a little, then sent her address to Bryan and Randolph, who were already on their way over.
With her mouth still half–full, she mumbled, “If it gets too late tonight, I’ll just have dinner with them outside. You don’t have to wait for me.”
Micah’s eyes softened. Watching her dart around the table, he noticed a bit of sauce at the corner of her lips. Smiling, he reached out with a handkerchief and gently wiped it away. “Alright,” he said simply.
Oriana paused mid–bite, a faint frown forming.
Something about his movements–so casual, so practiced–made her heart flutter oddly.
After wiping her mouth, he brushed the same handkerchief lightly across his own lips, as if cleaning her had been a seamless, instinctive gesture.
She blinked, trying to shake the strange feeling. “Oh, by the way, Micah–do you have the contact information for the horse trainer at the ranch?”
He looked up. “No, I don’t. Why?”
“The last time I was there, I asked him to help me look into Stormwind’s mother, Pebble. I’d like to get in touch if there’s any news.”
Micah set the handkerchief aside, his tone easy. “Alright. I’ll have someone check on it and let you know if there’s an update.”
“Mm–hmm.”
Just then, her phone buzzed—Bryan and Randolph had arrived at the gate.

Oriana quickly gathered her things, waved goodbye to Micah, and hurried downstairs.
Bryan and Randolph were chatting idly by the roadside, cigarette smoke curling lazily in the air. When they saw Oriana hurrying toward them, both men quickly stubbed out their cigarettes and tossed the butts into a nearby bin.
They even popped a couple of breath mints into their mouths before striding over with broad, easy smiles.
“Hey, slow down, Oriana!” Bryan called out, waving at her.
Both men had only sons of their own, so they’d long since taken to calling Oriana with genuine affection.
“Randolph, Bryan, I’m sorry to keep you waiting,” Oriana said, a touch of embarrassment in her tone. “I should’ve invited you both to the house, but Micah’s situation is… a little special. We don’t really have guests over often, so-”
Bryan waved her apology away good–naturedly. “Don’t worry about it. We’re not fussy people. As long as you two are happy in your little home, that’s all that matters.”
Randolph nodded in agreement, his kind smile deepening the lines at the corners of his eyes. “We could already tell yesterday that young man of yours treats you well. We can understand a few quirks.”
Oriana felt a quiet sigh of relief leave her chest. “Thank you.”
“Alright then,” Bryan said, clapping his hands lightly. “Let’s get going. Should we head to the university first?”
“Okay,” Oriana replied.
It was her first time spending a day alone with the two men, and she’d expected it to feel a little awkward, maybe even stiff.
But as it turned out, they were easy company–warm, humorous, and full of stories.
Randolph took the wheel, while Bryan chatted animatedly from the passenger seat, recounting their years working alongside Niall. For the first time, Oriana heard such vivid, firsthand accounts of her father’s work–his quirks, his brilliance, his stubborn ideals. A gentle warmth bloomed in her chest as she listened, half nostalgic, half wistful.
By the time they reached the university, the campus was quiet. Most students had already left after finals, leaving only a few behind–those cramming for graduate exams or working part- time. The near–empty grounds seemed to echo with the soft calm of early summer.

Zachary happened to have the day off, but when he heard they were coming, he made sure to wait for them downstairs.
As soon as Randolph parked the car and turned off the engine, he caught sight of Bryan in the passenger seat springing into action–jumping out and hurrying to open the door for Oriana.
Randolph snorted. “Old man, those joints of yours still work, huh?”
Bryan puffed out his chest proudly. “I’m still in my prime, thank you very much. You? You’d pull something trying to move that fast.”
Zachary, who was standing nearby, nearly dropped his jaw. His usually stern, no–nonsense father was actually grinning–and even making faces!
Bryan noticed his son’s dumbfounded expression and smirked. “Don’t get jealous, boy. You’re not getting this kind of treatment.”
Zachary was speechless.
