Oriana’s was white, and Micah’s was lead gray. Wedding bands on their fingers, matching bead bracelets on their wrists, and two striking faces that looked made to stand together from head to toe.
Oriana watched the scenery outside with full attention, while the man behind her watched her with the same focus, his eyes soft.
“Micah, do you think it will snow this year?”
“Not very likely. Do you want to see snow?” he asked back.
Oriana nodded without hesitation. “I do. The last time I saw snow I was very little. Owen barely reached my chest back then. I had a snowball fight with him, and my fingers got so cold my knuckles swelled. When we got home, the elders scolded us.”
It was more a scolding for Oriana alone than for both of them.
Her grandfather only adored his grandson. When he saw Owen’s little hands red with cold and heard him saying they hurt, his heart ached.
He called a doctor to treat Owen’s frostbite and bought him toys and treats to comfort his precious boy. Then he turned around and raked Oriana over the coals. Tapping her forehead, he blamed her for not knowing how to look after her little brother and called her a troublemaker.
Bramwell and Evelyn were there too. Bramwell was the most dutiful son and would never go against his father, and he loved his son as well, so he also blamed Oriana.
Evelyn stood by and watched with pleading eyes, not daring to step forward to defend her.
In the end, it was her grandmother, too ill to even get out of bed, who had someone wheel her out to shield the girl. Only then was Oriana, who had held back tears the whole time, rescued.
A weight settled on her shoulder, and Oriana pulled herself out of the memory. She turned and met Micah’s breathtaking face.
Warmth lay at the corners of his eyes and brows, melting the sadness inside her. “We will have our chance. We still have a long life ahead.”
Oriana nodded. “Okay.”
The car rolled slowly into the estate.
Because of the holiday, many branches of the family and relatives had returned from all over the world, and cars were lined up along both sides of the drive.
The moment Oriana got out, she felt the air was no colder than inside the car.
Looking more closely, she noticed the plants still held the colors of late autumn. Even though the vegetation belt they had just passed on the way into the open lands was carefully tended, it was not as well kept as what grew here at Caldwell Estate.

Oriana turned to help Micah out of the car and could not help feeling puzzled.

“This place is higher than the city. It should be colder by rights. Why does it feel warmer instead?”
Micah smiled faintly, and the butler who had hurried over to welcome them bent with kind deference, ready to explain. A lazy, rakish voice drifted in from the side.
“That is what you do not get. Everywhere on our family grounds has radiant floor heating under it except for the snow–viewing lake in the back garden. Of course the house’s plants and animals are healthier than those outside.”
They turned their heads. After some time away, Kenny, who had dyed all of his multicolored hair to a pale blue, strolled over with his hands folded behind his head.
He ignored Oriana and took two steps toward Micah.
Suddenly Kenny stopped. Under his light blue hair, his light eyes went wide with disbelief.
From head to toe, Micah was dressed in the exact same style as Oriana.
Not to mention Micah had deliberately folded his sleeves twice to show off the bracelet.
It wasn’t even close to luxury. Micah had grown up with treasures worth many millions under his nose, the kind he would not even look at once.
And now…
Just to wear a matching couple’s piece with Oriana, he was treating this cheap trinket like a treasure.
Kenny was shocked. He clutched his chest and took a step back. “Man, you have fallen.”
Micah was unconcerned. He lifted his hand slightly and caught Oriana’s wrist, lacing their fingers together.
“Is Grandfather at home?”
“Yes,” said Kenny.
The butler answered quickly, “He learned that you would be back today, and he has been happy for days. It just so happens that many collateral relatives arrived today as well. He is in the main hall receiving them and asked me to bring you both over.”
At that, Micah frowned.
Since he was a child, the thing he disliked most was seeing relatives.
