Chapter 299 New Employee

Grant’s gaze sharpened slightly as he did the math. Leonard had left the Research Center right around the time Oriana broke up with him and went to Jindiwood.
“What kind of work did you do under Micah?”
Leonard’s smile widened. Just as he suspected. Grant’s interest in him had everything to do with Micah.
Feigning hesitation, he said, “Mr. Holloway, the work I did under him was confidential. If I spill something and the Center finds out, I’ll be in trouble. I can’t afford that.”
He wasn’t confirmed for the job yet, and he wasn’t stupid enough to talk too freely.
Grant pressed his lips together. “You mean you’re not allowed to say, or you don’t have anything to say?”
Leonard’s face stiffened. Grant leaned back in his chair.
“Excluding your internship, you didn’t even last a full year under Micah. If you’d really been trusted with classified projects, they wouldn’t have let you go so easily. And if you were, you couldn’t just walk out of something like that clean.”
The Center would have enforced a non–compete clause.
Leonard’s face turned awkward. “Mr. Holloway, I-”
Grant glanced at his watch. “Think carefully. My time is limited. If you won’t talk, the interview’s over.”
“Wait!”
Seeing Grant about to stand, Leonard panicked. He shut his eyes and blurted, “I wasn’t involved in any key projects! Under Micah, I barely had any real assignments. He had his own department and projects, completely independent, and only his closest aide, Kieran, could approach him. I don’t know anything!”
Grant raised a brow. So easy to crack.
He raised an eyebrow and sat back in his chair.
Seeing this, Leonard felt more relaxed.

“So what did you do for him, then? Anything you do know about his projects?”

Leonard flushed in frustration. “I don’t know! Every day, I clocked in and out like a fool. He had special privileges–worked from home, rarely came to the Center. I almost never saw him!”
His voice rose with resentment. “I graduated from a top university. I joined the Center for him! Pulled every string I could just to get under his supervision. And he wasted a whole year of my life doing nothing!”
Grant let out a cold laugh. “That’s just like him. Arrogant to the bone.”
“You think so too, Mr. Holloway?” Leonard said quickly, mistaking sarcasm for sympathy.
He vented harder. “He made me rot at the Center, and just when I thought it couldn’t get worse, he sent me on a business trip to Seabar!”
Grant’s eyes narrowed. “Seabar?”
His tone dropped. “What for?”
Leonard gave a bitter chuckle.
“At first, I was thrilled. Thought I’d finally get a chance to prove myself. But that bastard–he sent me there to follow a woman. Told me to keep an eye on her and stop her if she showed signs of wanting to die.”
Leonard had kept that story bottled up for a long time.
He’d been afraid people would laugh at him for being used as a babysitter instead of a researcher. After that, though he found other decent jobs, his new supervisors soon deemed him incompetent and fired him.
He blamed Micah entirely. If it weren’t for Micah, he wouldn’t have wasted a whole year of his
career.
Now, finally venting, Leonard’s words tumbled out faster and harsher.
“That bastard was chasing after a woman and used me as a pawn! In the end, nothing even happened to her. When I confronted him, he didn’t even bother to explain–just transferred me elsewhere. Everyone in that place worships him, so when he kicked me out, nobody wanted to take me in. I was forced to resign! Micah’s a damn monster!”
The screech of a chair suddenly cut him off. Grant had shot to his feet, fury written all over h face.

Grant snatched it from his grasp.
