Growing up in the Sterling family under Bramwell’s traditional authoritarian rule, parent- child relationships were strictly hierarchical–demanding absolute obedience without question or dissent.
That rainy night when she’d defied him for the first time to follow Grant, his furious disappointment had been inevitable.
“Maybe your dad was just busy with work,” Oriana suggested gently. “Try asking him again today.”
“If he doesn’t come apologize first, I’m not talking to him! Whatever, you guys go ahead. Next time there’s drama, you’d better call me immediately!”
“Alright.”
After ending the call, Zara flopped back onto her bed for a nap. But the moment she closed her eyes, a sour churning erupted in her stomach.
She bolted to the bathroom, gripping the toilet bowl, but nothing came up.
Splashing water on her face, she groaned, “Did I eat something bad last night?
“Must be hunger. I’ll grab a snack before proper food.”
As she descended the stairs contemplating breakfast, her parents‘ hushed voices stopped her in her tracks.
“Is Zara up?”
“Still sleeping. I saw her gaming late again last night.”
“This girl…”
Darius Radcliffe sighed with fond exasperation. “She’s so carefree. If we can’t overcome this crisis, what will become of her?”
Zara froze on the steps, sinking silently onto the wooden treads.
Willa Radcliffe’s gentle voice responded, “As long as we’re together, we can face any challenge.”
“I’m sorry for dragging you into this. If I hadn’t gotten greedy with those investments, the company wouldn’t have this funding gap… wouldn’t owe these massive debts…”

“You did it for our family. We understand. Don’t blame yourself.” Willa comforted him.
“Thank you for standing by me.” Darius took a steadying breath. “You’re right. Together, we’ll find a way to cover the shortfall.”
“Should we ask Oriana? Zara mentioned her husband-”
“No. That would involve Zara, and I don’t want her worrying about the company. Besides, Oriana had such a hard life until recently. The amount we need is too large–we can’t trouble them.”
“You’re right.” Willa sounded chastened. “I wasn’t thinking clearly. After everything she’s been through, asking for help might cause issues with her in–laws. We can’t do that to her.”
Darius patted her shoulder. “You meant well. I’ll find another way.
“As for Zara, keep her occupied outside the house. Thank goodness I sent her to Jindiwood- she never saw the debt collectors.
“I’m looking at travel options for her. She’s always wanted to see Kenorth, though the cost…”
“Let her go! If we miss this chance, it might become a permanent regret. While I still can, I want to give her this.”
Willa smiled softly, “Alright.”
Zara stumbled back to her room in a daze. Though the central heating warmed both floors of their Seabar home against the early spring chill, an icy numbness had settled in her hands and feet that no radiator could thaw.
She sat on the edge of her bed for a long time, slowly processing the harsh reality: her family was in serious financial trouble–serious enough to weigh so heavily on her parents.
