Oscar spoke with a quiet intensity, “Do you realize what pulling strings for Owen truly means?”
Leo’s voice was heavy as he continued, “It means an ordinary person who could have succeeded on their own merit–someone who might support their entire family–gets pushed out by an unqualified candidate like Owen who relies on connections!”
Ethan stared unwaveringly at Kai. “Have you forgotten how much we suffered, Kai? We can’t betray our past selves just because we’ve gained status and power.”
Arthur clenched his fist, his voice low. “We can’t control others, but we can’t do this. Would it honor our benefactor’s sacrifice?”
“I…” Kai was deeply shaken, his eyes wide with shock. He had been so single–mindedly focused on securing a future for Luna that he hadn’t considered these implications.
His heart pounded, his emotions in turmoil as conflicting thoughts warred within him. He tried to rationalize, “We don’t necessarily have to take someone else’s spot, right? Maybe we can find a way to add an extra placement? They’re just students–what’s one more?”
Ethan stood up. As the eldest and least formally educated among them, he had endured the most hardship. He placed a firm hand on Kai’s shoulder, the pressure palpable. “Kai, don’t be naive. Society is harsh and realistic. If you secure a spot for Owen, you will inevitably push out someone who truly deserves it.”
“Then what should we do? We can’t just stand by and watch Luna be abandoned by that scumbag Grant in the future!”
“Kai,” Leo suddenly spoke, his tone distant. “Stop doing foolish things under the guise of helping others. Beyond self–satisfaction, it serves no purpose.”
Silence fell inside the van after Leo’s words, complex emotions playing across all five faces.
Reflecting on it, they had indeed done many self–righteous things under the pretense of repaying a debt, actions that betrayed their core principles.
Leo, who treated academic research with utmost rigor, had repeatedly helped Luna complete her data, even acting as her ghostwriter for the review.
Ethan, frugal and self–disciplined, who never indulged even his own sister, had several times covered the exorbitant bills for Luna’s membership card.
Arthur’s perpetually booked–out restaurant made constant exceptions for Luna, allowing her

to jump the queue of guests who had reserved weeks in advance, even arranging private bookings for her.
Oscar, after joining the Mountain River Planet team, gradually found Grant’s aggressive business philosophy clashed with his own research–focused goal. Despite several arguments, he had to defer to Grant as the leader.
Kai was no exception–the man who never privately contacted fans and guarded his reputation meticulously had broken his own rules for Luna, even dragging his entire company’s PR department into cleaning up his trending topics messes…
Now, Leo’s single sentence had jolted them awake. Were these actions for Luna truly what they wanted?
A self–mocking smile touched Leo’s lips. If Oriana hadn’t awakened him, he might have remained oblivious, persisting down the wrong path with clear eyes.
The silence in the van stretched.
Finally, Leo’s phone buzzed–a message from Cormac summoning him.
He stood. “I have work. I need to get back to the hospital.”
Before leaving, he reaffirmed his stance. “Kai, I won’t agree to what you proposed, and I hope you don’t make a mistake. At the very least, this kind of thing shouldn’t be done by us.”
Kai stood frozen, watching Leo’s retreating back, speechless for a long time.
Two days later, it was time for Micah’s second injection.
Nelson, who had been abroad previously, had specially returned for this. He inquired about Micah’s condition over the past few days.
Micah thought for a moment, then suddenly asked, “Does this injection cause hallucinations?”
Nelson shook his head. “Of course not. There are no hallucinogenic components in the serum. Why do you ask, Mr. Caldwell?”
Micah pressed his lips together. Though the memory was blurry, he vaguely recalled seeing Oriana by his side after the last injection.
If it wasn’t a hallucination…
“Nothing. Proceed with the second injection.”

Nelson nodded, signaling the nurse to prepare. His team was assembled by the Caldwell family, dedicated solely to Micah’s care.
With the director present, he personally administered the injection and monitored the
process.
Micah endured the agony again, no less intense than the first time. But this time, with only Nelson present, he experienced no further illusions before succumbing to unconsciousness.
He woke half an hour later. Supporting his heavy head, he tried to rise, but a wave of violent dizziness sent him crashing back into the chair.
Seeing this, Nelson’s expression turned grave. “Since the onset of your condition, this is the first time you’ve actively undergone drug therapy. We didn’t anticipate the serum’s impact would be this severe on you, Mr. Caldwell.”
