Then, out of nowhere, Micah lifted Oriana up and set her down on the cold marble counter.

He slid some clothes beneath her to soften the surface, and then everything blurred into heat and breath and heartbeat.

When Oriana opened her eyes again, daylight was already pouring in through the windows, bright and blinding.

She had fallen asleep face down.

They’d gone at it for nearly an hour on the countertop last night. Even with several layers of clothes underneath, the hard surface had left her sore all over.

As she turned over, her fingers brushed against something cool at her neck–half warm from her skin, half icy to the touch. It was her ruby pendant.

When did that get back on me?

Probably last night?

She vaguely remembered Micah telling her to lift her chin at some point, but she’d been too tired to think much about it.

After washing up and getting dressed, Oriana walked out to find Micah already directing the home robots to clean the kitchen.

Her face burned.

Thank God the robots didn’t have emotions–otherwise, she’d have died of embarrassment.

Chubby, the little spherical bot, rolled up beside her. “Oriana, did you and Dad have a fight in the kitchen last night? The battlefield looked intense!”

Oriana forced a laugh. “Kids shouldn’t ask about grown–up

stuff.”

“I’m not a kid,” Chubby protested. “I’m a robot.”

Flustered, Oriana ducked her head and ran into the kitchen. She slipped her arms around Micah from behind, resting her face against his broad back.

Still not fully over last night, she gave in to a small surge of annoyance and bit him lightly through his silk pajama top.

“Ah-” Micah hissed, then turned his head with a smile full of indulgence. “Still holding a grudge?”

“This is all your fault!” she complained in mock anger. “I can’t even face Chubby now.”

Micah’s lips twitched. “I’ll fix that. I’ll reprogram him–change his name and face. Then you won’t have to feel awkward around him anymore.”

Oriana stared. “How is that not just closing your eyes and pretending you can’t see?”

He answered, deadpan, “It’s exactly that.”

She rolled her eyes badly.

Then, just because, she leaned over and bit his left shoulder again.

Once they’d finished teasing each other, they sat down for breakfast.

After last night’s exercise, Oriana was starving–she ate quickly, savoring every bite.

“Oh, right,” she said between mouthfuls, “why did you give me another necklace?”

Micah’s tone softened. “It’s a gift for getting accepted into graduate school.”

Oriana gave him a helpless little smile. “You just gave me a whole jewelry set for New Year’s. That wasn’t long ago.”

“It doesn’t matter. Whatever I want to give you, you’ll accept. Since your work only allows necklaces, I’ll just keep giving you more.”

She couldn’t help lifting her thumb in surrender. “Mr. Caldwell, you really are rich and reckless.”

Micah smirked. “What’s mine is yours, honey. No need to be frugal on my behalf.”

“Then I’ll make sure to spend more,” she joked.

“I’d love that.”

After breakfast, Oriana headed out early–she’d arranged to meet Leo to go over some data analysis.

In the car, she finally had time to check her phone. Lily had sent a flood of messages since last night.
